Fond Memories

I remember buying this as an e-book many years ago from Bud Jeffries' old site. After buying it, I also remember trying to collect all the printer paper in the house so I could print this out. Quick note: this was years before I had a laptop or iPod for that matter. I didn't want to sit at a desk for a prolonged period of time to try to read a book. Back to the review.

SHORT REVIEW: I like this book. I think it should be in everybody's strength/ fitness library, if you have one.

Now for the LONGER REVIEW for those who are interested:

This book is a little difficult for me to review. I would have to almost write two separate reviews. One for when I originally read it, and one for what I think about it now. I'll try my best to combine those two viewpoints into one logical review.

When I first read this book, it changed the way I looked at training/ working out. Prior to this book, I did mostly body weight & practicing martial arts. This book introduced me to concepts and training ideas I hadn't heard of before. I was in awe.

Fast forward some years, I still think highly of this book. I like Bud's conversational tone. He takes the time to explain things in ways that most people will understand. I have a few of his DVDs and this is really how he talks. I don't like the more "scientific" books on fitness. They tend to be too technical and full of terms that the average person isn't going to understand unless they were deeper into the fitness field. Bud's products aren't like that. It isn't that he talks to you like you're stupid. It isn't that he's not that bright himself. On the contrary, everything that I've seen proves otherwise. He just doesn't waste time making things more complicated than necessary.

As for the content of the book, I think it has stood the test of time. It talks about some of Bud's earliest ideas about how to build incredible strength and endurance. It was one of the first modern books to actually talk about strongman training that I know of. Again, it is a recommended read.

Now for the negatives, or the less positive points. I have read and experimented with a LOT of things when it comes to physical training. I still implement some ideas from this book, but not all. My endurance work now includes more traditional cardio work. Bud's ideas (in this very early book at least) will give you good strength, but his endurance part is more muscle/ strength endurance than pure top level cardio endurance. I think both are important for general fitness. I believe Bud does too, but his ideas back then differ from mine currently about how to obtain it best. Also, this book is a bit expensive. I still recommend it, but $35 seems slightly overpriced. Unfortunately, this book is still in a bit of a niche market and probably not mass produced. I'm not an expert on these things, but that most likely means that it costs them more to produce it. People still have to feed their family. It may not be the most reasonable (by my frugal standards anyway), but it isn't outrageously priced either.

Man, this review is getting long. Sorry about that. I just felt like I had to make up for the lack of reviews about this book. It deserve at least one person's opinion. Pick up this book if you're interested. If nothing else, I think it's a very interesting read.
