I am a self studying Korean learner. I very much recommend this book as a stepping stone tool, especially if you have already grasped the Hangul alphabet and can tie it in with making some words as there are no Romanizations available or any CD that you can follow and learn along with. I still purchased this more as a second step for reading and learning a variety of words. Some of the sections in book include: personal info, family, health, everyday activities, hobbies, money numbers calendar clothes colors foods, home school job travel entertainment nature, shopping travel and descriptions. I also bought McGraw-Hill's Korean Illustrated Dictionary http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/0071769005/ref=oh_details_o08_s00_i04?ie=UTF8&psc=1 which does have Romanizations (if you are looking for a good beginners dictionary-with CD) as a 1st dictionary and Word by Word for the 2nd one. Hope this helps

As a retired ESOL teacher, I can assure you this is "the" book for beginners. Why because it has pictures. Think of your kitchen. Now try and label every appliance and tool in it. Give each item etc. a number. Then write the English and the corresponding foregien language next to it. An awesome task. That's what this book does and it give an incredible amount of practical vocabulary for everyday life skills not just the kitchen. Try it you'll love it! And it is worth every penny of the price. English/Spanish, English/Russian, English/Chinese and on and on!

All the books in this series are excellent

I recommend all the books in this series for beginning-level English learners. This picture dictionary is particularly useful if the student is an absolute beginner and has no English literacy whatsoever. There is no need to purchase it new, however, as it is solely a dictionary. It might not be entirely helpful if you were to use it in a very rural setting or a developing country since the pictures represent things most found in cities or developed countries.

About the Author

Jim McKenzie was the first to come out with a book that combines program planning, implementing, and evaluating all in one place. A Professor at Penn State Hershey and a Professor Emeritus at Ball State University, he is Master Certified Health Education Specialist (MCHES). He also serves as the Coordinator of the Division Board of Certified Health Education Specialists of the National Commission for Health Education Credentialing.

 

Brad Neiger is the chair of the Health Science Department at Brigham Young University. Brad has also served in the field within the Utah State Department of Health and the National Health Institute.

 

Rosemary Thackeray is an Associate Professor also at Brigham Young University. She was brought on this edition of the text primarily to work on the marketing chapter, which is her area of expertise.

Too many words=brain hurt

While the book is full of information, it's so much that it all starts to blend together. It's very boring with terms that have "borrowed" definitions from other sources, often more than one for each. All of these in note citations.This complicates it very much.

Covering the age of exploration, it is an informal history of the European invasion and the islanders' futile resistance, ending with the U.S. presence in the islands in the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries. Corn (Distant Islands: Travels across Indonesia, 1991) takes the reader from the founding of Malacca by Sumatran refugees right through the successive waves of Portuguese, Spanish, Dutch, and English invasions (the first English colony in the world, on the tiny island of Pulau Run, gave them a presence in the area, which they relinquished in 1667 at the Peace of Breda in exchange for Manhattan). Corn details the roles of such figures as Magellan, Francis Xavier, the infamous Jan Pieterszoon Coen, and Francis Drake. But this book is more than a chronicle of voyages and invasions as Corn endeavors to show how the spice trade was the catalyst of the expanding world economy, the bridge between feudalism and capitalism. A lucid and comprehensive account spanning the nearly four centuries of international intrigue and bloody struggle for control of the vast riches of the Spice Islands. At the dawn of the 16th century, the group of islands astride the equator to the east of Java known as the Moluccas became the stage for the first major colonial conflict played out by the seagoing European powers, and as Corn (Distant Islands: Crossing Indonesia's Ring of Fire, 1991) ably relates, the prizes were the most valuable commodities on earth: nutmeg, cloves, cinnamon, and later pepper. The Spanish were the first beneficiaries of a cargo of spices brought by the remaining ship of Magellan's last voyage, but it was the Portuguese, urged on by figures such as the Jesuit Francis Xavier, who militarily first took control of the spice trade. Control over the region was finally wrested in the early 17th century by the tyrannical Dutch East India Company, responsible for the massacre of 14,000 of the 15,000 inhabitants of the Banda Islands, the richest spice-producing islands in the East Indies. The final section of Corn's study focuses on the merchants of Salem, who carried on a fantastically lucrative trade in pepper with the canny and often treacherous rajahs on Sumatra. As in most good history books, readers will be challenged by a wealth of revelatory arcana; for instance, unbelievably, until the mid-18th century botanists believed that plants native to one region could not be grown anywhere else; as part of the treaty eliminating England as a player in the Moluccas, Holland traded New Amsterdam- -later Manhattan--to the English for a tiny island two miles long and a half mile wide. This is as pleasurable and eye-opening a history as one would hope for, generous in its descriptions of exotic islands and exciting in its depictions of the men who made fortunes in their waters. Interesting adventure read but needs better editing.

I've read this book twice, several years apart. The subject is interesting, and I have a better idea about the importance of the spice trade and the subsequent development of colonization and international competition in the 16th-19th centuries. However, I must agree with another reviewers about the need for better editing. The author jumps back and forth in historical dates, which makes the reader have to look back to previous pages to be sure of what era the author is describing. While the details provided by the author makes for an interesting narrative, on reflection, the reader realizes that many of the descriptions must be pure invention by the author. For reasons I still can't fathom, he spends over 30 pages (nearly 10% of the book) discussing alleged adventures of Francis Xavier in India, China, The Spice Islands, and Japan, relating apocryphal stories that seem mostly legends. While it may be true that Xavier was there, it contributes very little to the story, and could have been covered in a paragraph or two. ive enjoyed the book enough to read it twice, but it needed better editing to make it even better

Great history. Too many errors. On page xxi,Corn writes "rose in value one hundred percent each time they changed hands-----they changed hands hundreds of times". Impossible! He probably means,'increased in value hundreds of times'.Even if you start with one penny per pound and increased it 100% just 30 times,you would have ONE BILLION PENNIES! Also 3 different dates relating to same incident. Page 134,line 11,states 1608 Page 135,line1 ,states 1609 Page 137,4th line from bottom,states 1509. This should not be multiple choice. Corn writes about building a fort "on the other side of the river",what river? These and other shortcomings interrupted the normal flow of reading. Otherwise,quite informative and exciting story.

A confusing and time-wasting book

To database developers, administrators or curious students, with love:
It is very unfortunate that destiny had me suffer the tremendous pain and frustration in reading the 3rd edition of "Database Management Systems", by Ramakrishnan and Gehrke, to learn the fundamentals of DBMS, for the contents of the book lack preciseness and clarity, thus, leading to a lot of confusion and ambiguity in the mind of the reader, who is learning databases for the first time (and is presumably an experienced programmer).
Authors of the book have badly failed in properly covering the topics based on clear and formal definitions of fundamental database concepts. Many topics were not dealth with by the authors comprehensively and lack focus too. The book is full of hundreds of lines of explanation that require another expanation. It is true that this book is more like a puzzle for you to put together in order to make heads or tails of what the topic really is all about.
This book seems appealing, however, to the instructors, for the authors have provided them with supplementary material that mainly includes lecture slides, complete solutions to problems in the book, and some examination papers.
In summary and conclusion, the 3rd edition of "Database Management Systems", by Ramakrishnan and Gehrke, sucks and is it not worth your time or money. This conclusion higly propabilistically holds for all previous editions of the book. A strongly recommended alternative is "Fundamentals of Database Systems" by Elmasri and Navathe.
Oh, and by the way, those quotes (all of which I bothered to read) that the authors have selected to start each chapter of the book with are really silly, irrelevant and meaningless.

It's a good book for databases, but don't expect more

A lot of the reviews on here are negatively critiquing this book for what I feel are the wrong reasons. I used this book for a senior University course, and it covered the material, and did so well, and to a good level of detail. It gives great coverage on the theoretical level and decent coverage on the details/practical level. I taught myself the whole course using the textbook references to this book (I had an attendance problem), and did fine in the course. Just be sure that your expectations are reasonalbe: it gets into ways to access databases and how to design architectures around data, but this isn't a book about jsp, or enterprise architecture, so don't expect that - but if you're ever writing jsp and need a tip on getting to your database, this book might be able to help. This is a book about data and databases, and it covers that material well.

Confusing and poorly written

To be blunt, this book is terrible. I've read the first 21 chapters very carefully. The coverage of material is fairly thorough. However, the text is confusing, poorly written, and lacks useful examples. Some sentences were so ambiguous that I needed to read them 5-10 times to understand what the authors were apparently trying to say.
I've been involved in academic science and engineering for 15 years, and strongly feel that this is one of the worst textbooks I've ever read.
As an alternative, you might consider the book by Garcia-Molina et al - although I haven't read that book carefully enough to intelligently compare the two.

About the Author
Nicknamed Mr. BART by his colleagues, Michael C. Healy was responsible for BART's media affairs and marketing activities from 1971-about ten months before trains started running-until his retirement in 2004. He wrote for radio and film and was the editor of the Sausalito News before taking a public relations job at the nascent transit agency. He is an alumnus of the University of Southern California.

The author, given his history as a BART employee with key access to the major players and behind the scenes activity of BART, is the perfect person to write this combination history and tell-all book about the San Francisco Bay Area's highly dysfunctional, yet desperately needed, public transport system. Michael Healy provides abundant detail around key decisions and events during BART's history, but also has an engaging writing style that makes this book a real page turner, rather than a dry book of statistics and dates. His telling of the internal mole hunt around a group of whistle-blowing engineers is really like a well-crafted mystery tale that had me on the edge of my seat. But he also highlights some lighter moments, such as his unorthodox decision to hire Henny Youngman (Take my BART - please!) as a spokesman. And his retelling of the many (literally) backroom deals that created BART is riveting, especially where he shows how close BART was to never existing due to political machinations. But most of all, the author shows how many of the problems plaguing BART today (technical problems; poor management; union issues; arrogance leading to poor planning (no redundancies built into the system because the initial engineers boasted of an ongoing 0% failure level!) have their origins in the heady mishmash of personalities, technologies, and ego that came together 50 years ago.
