Grade 6-9?These biographies, with their bright, appealing covers, should attract readers. Lisandrelli draws heavily on Angelou's extensive autobiographical writings, but has also culled several other sources as well. Hurston, too, provides an evenhanded portrayal of a complex and unique woman. The major strengths of both books include an adequate representation of the subjects' lives, including both exemplary and the not-so-exemplary aspects. However, in Angelou especially, the abundance of footnotes may prove distracting. The practice is much less obtrusive in Hurston. Both authors offer honest portraits of strong African American women. Their hard work, optimism, perseverance, and belief in themselves offer inspiration to readers of either sex or any ethnic origin. Yannuzzi (Wilma Mankiller, 1994, not reviewed), awkwardly rehashing information better handled by one of her sources--Mary Lyons's Sorrow's Kitchen (1993)--seldom peeks below the surface of Hurston's checkered literary career and notably unstable private life. A luminary of the Harlem Renaissance, Hurston later became an enthusiastic collector of African-American tales, lore, and cultural practices--but, unable to hold on to money, friends, husbands, or benefactors, died in poverty and remained almost forgotten until the mid-1970s. Through a selection of telling incidents and brief quoted comments, Hurston's intelligence and strong personality come across, but her written work is passed over virtually unassessed in a dry recitation of titles and content summaries that reads like CIP notes. Yannuzzi does not explain how an author supposedly endowed with ``a big talent and a strong will to succeed'' met with such mixed reviews and produced so many rejected manuscripts; readers will come away with only vague ideas of the quality of Hurston's thought or writing. This may be more detailed than Patricia McKissack's shorter Zora Neale Hurston, Writer and Storyteller (1992), but it offers no further insight. 4 or 5 out of 16 ain't good...

This collection of 16 short stories was profoundly disappointing, if only because I expect better from something with Turtledove's name on it. There is a certain expectation when reading alternate history that either the the events and/or people being tinkered with are so familiar that they need no introduction, or that a small introduction will be given to set up the story (not to mention maps). Unfortunately that was not the case here, as a number of the stories used rather obscure incidents and people as their basis, and there was no corresponding supplementary material. It also doesn't help expectations when the jacket copy is about scenarios that aren't in the book. Add some rather tepid writing in a number of cases, and the book got rather tedious.
If you're going to borrow it, there are a few stories worth checking out. Lillian Carl's "The Test of Gold," focusing on the Romans vs. Boadica, was one of the better stories, albeit somewhat roughly told via the memoirs of an old Roman. S.M. Stirling's, "The Charge of Lee's Light Brigade," has a somewhat interesting premise at least: that Gen. Lee of Civil War fame, instead fights with C.S.A. along with other British forces at Balaclava in a very different Charge of the Light Brigade. Somewhat slyly, Stirling seems to have inserted George MacDonald Fraser's legendary scoundrel and rouge "Flashman" in the story as an homage to the great Scottish writer, which works rather well as Flashman does campaign there in "Flashman at the Charge." Another of the best stories is William Sanders' "Billy Mitchell's Overt Act," in which a military aviation pioneer manages to thwart the attack on Pearl Harbor. Told as a series of excerpts from books, interviews, and testimony, he manages to weave a very engaging tale. The final story, R.M. Meluch's "Vati" is probably the best of the bunch, showing what might have happened had a more imaginative and forceful man taken over German air operations and sped up production of jet aircraft, thus preventing D-Day. It's something the Germans did manage to do at the end of the war, but by then was too little, too late.
As for the rest: "Tradition," by Elizabeth Moon (who's "Deed of Paksenarrion" trilogy I love), suffers from an unknown main character, British WWI Rear Admiral Cradock, a slightly obscure setting, the Mediterranean (more interestingly treated in the historical fiction of John Biggins), and the need to have detailed maps at hand to follow the action. Brad Linaweaver's rather silly "And to the Republic For Which It Stands" imagines an alternate Caesar. Lois Tilton's "The Craft of War" is annoyingly written as a dialogue between Socrates and a student about Sun Tzu's "The Art of War." Jody Nye's "Queen of the Amazons" is a terrible Crusader piece fortunately followed by a competent as usual WWII piece by editor Turtledove. Unfortunately, one then segues into an utter piece of dreck, Esther Friesner's "An Old Man's Summer" featuring the rambling reminisces of a dying Eisenhower. Bill Fawcett's "The Last Crusader" establishes the fun premise of Napoleon as a Cardinal, but doesn't take it anywhere. Even though it didn't particularly engage me, Janet Berliner's "A Case For Justice" is worth mentioning for taking as it's subject, the South African leader Jan Smuts. William Forstchen's "A Hard Day For Mother" folds a clich� "brother vs. brother" Civil War tale into the battle for Round Top Hill at Gettysburg. David Weber's "The Captain From Kirkbeam" is the first of two seafaring stories, his being about a commander trying to blockade French ships from sailing into the Chesapeake Bay during the War for Independence. "Vive L'Amiral," by John Mina imagines Nelson as fighting on the French side, rather than the British, with rather different results, of course. Brian Thomsen's "Bloodstained Ground," is a rather cheezy and weak attempt to show a drunken Samuel Clemens uncovering the hidden truth about "President" Custer and what really happened at Little Big Horn.
So, maybe four or five stories worth reading all told, mixed in with a few more interesting premises, and a lot of bad and just plain boring ones. You're better off checking out Robert Cowley's "What If?: The World's Foremost Military Historians Imagine What Might Have Been."

Good, but not great

The book delivers what it says it does. Some of the stories have interesting notions, but don't really do anything spectacular with them. The book would have been improved if the editors had included an afterword on each story discussing how the incident described in the story was different from the real world, and (if applicable) why that's important. Some of the historical episodes, such as Bodicca's revolt against the Romans, and the flight of the Goeben and Breslau in World War I, are rather obscure. The voyage of the Goeben, for example, was literally a crucial episode in world history, but most people are not World War I buffs and won't understand this, and how important the alternative resolution in this story was.

this book is great;i found the authors approach different from the usual mill of prayers we are perhaps accustomed to.it really makes one grasp the underlining powerbase behind the success of prayers,chants e.t.c.,and allows one to directly tap into that powerbase
with ease.i was unsure what to expect when ordering this book, but i can now tell anyone who cares to know that this book is superb.
i do not for one moment regret having this book.

I love this book! The chants & spells are simple & easy & no items are needed to do these. I started noticing a big difference by the 2nd night. Don't waste your money on alot of other books because this one will do the trick.

This Book Will Make Anything You Believe In Work & Produce Results For You

This book is truly one of the best books I have read on the topic.

Why? You might ask. Because no matter whether you are into magick, religious prayer, affirmations. This books will hive you the mindset you need to make whatever spiritual / magickal / manifestation practice work for you and produce results.

So. Now your wonder: How? The reason this book will make a "powerhouse" is simple. You will learn where the power from spells, prayers, curses,and chants come from. (Which is you) By the way I didnt just say that use the title of the book.

The author does a really job at explaining one of the most important topic any could learn on there spititual path. Not to give the all of the book away but: Everything works or fails based on the level of emotion you bring to it.

I would also recomend this book along with a copy of "the Kybalion".

Hidden flaws

On first read-through, I was excited by this book. Enough so that I organized and taught a graduate seminar using it as a text. My experience with the book was less than fully satisfactory, I am sorry to say. The subject matter is important, and van der Vaart's pathway through the material is well conceived, but in the nitty-gritty details there are problems. The all-important Chapters 19-25, on asymptotics in metric spaces, suffers from wild differences in level of exposition, even within individual chapters. Some notations and concepts are left undefined. Most proofs are incomplete sketches, leaving many students confused and bewildered. It takes a lot of mathematical maturity to fully decode what van der Vaart has to say, with the result that his message is often missed or misunderstood. The supplementary notes that I felt required to write ballooned from an initial 10 pages to over 60, and I believe that other, more conscientious professors have written far more. I have no doubt that some of those "supplementary" collections of notes will see their way into print, as textbooks that ultimately do a far better job with this critical material.

Excellent textbook on asymptotics in statistics

This book covers asymptotics at a level suitable for graduate students in statistics and other disciplines such as economics. It does not really treat time-series issues, but apart from that its coverage is very impressive. It covers M-estimators, efficiency, quantile estimators, semiparametrics, and much more. The writing is remarkably lucid; proofs are succinct but very readable. One feature I particularly liked was a very readable introduction to empirical process theory, which would be a good place to start before tackling the van der Vaart and Wellner's more advanced book.

Excellent book, but leaves out many finer technical details.

It is a great book with excellent coverage of topics, but it does not fill in many crucial and important details - the kind of technical details which is exactly what you are looking for. If you are reading it thoroughly, after a stage you will wonder why the author has left so much unwritten and unclear. You may scratch your head on one single statement for a week or more and start feeling frustrated. One particular example is the treatment of M-estimators in Chapter 5.

But, nevertheless it is still worth reading every bit, because it provides extremely useful results and tools in almost all the areas, which it covers.

Leonard Stringfield was born in 1920. He was director of CRIFO (Civilian Research, Interplanetary Flying Objects) - one of the world's largest research groups during the mid-5Os, and publisher of its newsletter, ORBIT (1953-1957).

He also worked in cooperation with the United States Air Force (1953-1957), investigating and reporting UFO activity, having been assigned a special code number for reporting to the Air Defense Command in Columbus, Ohio.

For over 30 years, Stringfield served in several of the major UFO organizations in a public relations capacity. From 1957 to 1970, he was public relations adviser with the National Investigations Committee on Aerial Phenomena (NICAP). Later on, he was Director of Public Relations and a board member of the Mutual UFO Network (MUFON). He was also a regional investigator for the Center for UFO Studies, directed by Dr. J. Allen Hynek.

Stringfield was an executive with DuBois Chemicals, an international manufacturer. Stringfield retired in 1981 as Director of Public Relations and Marketing Services for DuBois Chemicals, a division of Chemed Corp., after 31 years service with the company.

From 1967-1968 he served as Early Warning Coordinator for the University of Colarado UFO Project, screening UFO reports for possible scientific study.

Stringfield was also an advisor to Sir Eric Gairy, former Prime Minister of Grenada, 1977-78, during his efforts to establish a UFO research agency within the framework of the United Nations.

Stringfield passed away in 1994, leaving a string of fascinating publications behind, one of which is "UFO Crash Retrievals: The Inner Sanctum - Status Report VI," written not long before his death. It is is filled with interesting details about a number of major UFO cases.

Inside "Ufology's Hot Kitchen"

Dated June 1991, Leonard Stringfield's sixth Status Report is by far the longest, at 140 pages, but I prefer the first three ones, as they just had details of various reports. With this sixth one, he includes details of other people's findings. He begins by recounting his experience when he delivered his first speech at a MUFON conference in 1978. J. Allen Hynek sat close to the front. A reported CIA official is quoted: "If Stringfield had said certain things about crash and retrievals, Hynek would have taken over." Stringfield states that Hynek demanded names and details from him. (In his book Revelations, Jacques Vallee states that Hynek met Stringfield several times.)

There is more on Roswell. It seems that a B-29 transported the bodies to Fort Worth on 9th July 1947, according to reported eyewitness testimony. As for the bodies, there were "autopsies of midget people with mongoloid heads that were accidentally exposed to high doses of radiation at Los Alamos" and a nurse stated that there were "human experiments for biological and nuclear medicine research." She saw small bodies with deformed heads and limbs and "thought they may have come from Japan after the war." The names Von Braun, Condon , Oppenheimer and Teller are mentioned in connection with this.

The issue of whether bodies associated with the Roswell incident are humans that had been experimented on, or aliens, is not satisfactorily resolved. Another list of names is mentioned: General Groves, Oppenheimer, Bush, von Neumann, von Karman, Steinhoff, LaPaz.

A craft with the same insignia as that on the reported 1964 Socorro craft makes a reappearance, this time near Tong Li Sap, Cambodia, 1972. A US Army Special Operations Group were reportedly engaged in a firefight with the occupants of an identified alien craft. The platoon reportedly happened on a group of aliens sorting human body parts in to large bins and sealing them. The craft reportedly emitted a high pitched hum. The encounter was supposedly reported to a representative of "MAJIC".

Future mind control author Armen Victorian appears in the pages. Also known as Henry Azadehdel, details are presented into his and UFO Crash at Aztec author William Steinman's investigation of Eric Walker, a scientist who reportedly was present at the Kecksburg reported UFO crash. Stringfield also presents Victorian/Azadehdel's interesting investigation into a reported UFO crash in South Africa in May 1989.

There is also an extensive report conducted by the Long Island UFO Network on a reported downing of a UFO at Moriches Bay, Long Island, New York in 1989, including pseudonymous testimony by a supposed scientist who says he discovered the technology on the alien craft to be crystalline-based.

Stringfield also presents details of hoax photos of aliens, including the New Mexico alien with a zipper. Editor of Flying Saucer Review Gordon Creighton stated that Timothy Good considered the photo might be genuine, however Stringfield states, "Facts, however, show that the alien was nothing more than a wax dummy, lying prone under a plexiglas canopy, on exhibition in Montreal, Canada, dating back to 1967."

read, used, successful

As a teacher in an affluent school that demands competent and creative teachers, I am always looking for new ways to engage my students and help them to develop critical thinking skills and a love for education. Having read the four book series and having instituted the ideas into practice, I can say it has made me a better teacher and has enlivened my classroom. Although it is true that the book lacks any scientific data to back its assertions, so it is with most books on education. Education is a difficult concept to scientifically quantify, and first one would have to answer the question...What is education? That notwithstanding, this book helps in all areas of teaching from the teaching of intelligent, curious students to less inspired and motivated student to those who have been mainstreamed into the classroom. It helps develop a "whole" classroom that benefits each and every child.

The series of books are interesting reading. Many good ideas, but tough to implement as an individual. These would be good books to use for a Professional Learning Circle or professional development.

A Nonresearched Gimmick!

It is evident that Mr. Costa has read the many books out there that tell you that you can become a recognized "authority" in your field by inventing a new jargon and writing a book. Because that is just what Mr. Costa does! There is no scientific or physiological data, no scientifically based reasearch studies. In this age of brain research, there is no excuse for a book that advocates improving children's attention span by having them make posters! This book is a total waste of time and money!!!!

An outstanding practical guide for teachers to work together

The chapters touch on the real issues that affect schools and keep the adults in schools from working effectively together. In other words, all the unmentioned political and interpersonal foolishness that nobody teaches you about in teacher school are laid right out there, along with suggestions on how to deal effectively with problem situations. Un libro muy sensual y muy er�tico, pero con mucho m�s que ofrecer.

No soy muy aficionado a las novelas rom�ntico-er�ticas. Y qued� bastante desenga�ado del genero con la lectura de "50 sombras de Grey" de E. L. James por lo que dud� un poco cuando me recomendaron este libro. Debo decir que he quedado gratamente impresionado. Afortunamente los defectos que originaron mi rechazo a la trilog�a de Grey no se repiten en Paulette Mestre.
Para empezar, aqu� tenemos una trama m�s interesante y con varios giros de acontecimientos, a diferencia de la historia lineal que ofrece James centrada b�sicamente en el despertar er�tico de la se�orita Steele, Un argumento algo lineal y sin sorpresas narrativas. Por contra, “La tentaci�n” es una historia compleja que se va devanando poco a poco y que nos ofrece capas y m�s capas, hasta el mismo final del libro. No ahond� m�s en ese tema para no caer en spoilers.
Ni que decir que el personaje femenino principal es fascinante y provocativo, en cierto modo lleva la historia y no se deja llevar por la historia, como ocurre con otras obras que act�an con la convenci�n comercial del g�nero er�tico. Es una chica atrevida, arriesgada, a veces quiz�s irresponsable. Sus acciones la perfilan ante el lector. El personaje le sale redondo a la autora.
Y si nos quedamos a examinar solamente lo estrictamente relacionado con el tema erotico, la autora Mestre se atreve a m�s. Si se busca un libro que encienda la hoguera sensual y er�tica, pues este libro es el adecuado. A m� me dejo particularmente impresionado una escena, casi al final de la obra en cierto restaurante, muy candente. Es el plato fuerte de la narraci�n. De nuevo, no quiero caer en spoilers, pero s� asegur� que esta escena, y otras, dejar�n satisfecho al p�blico amante de la ficci�n er�tica.
Pero como ya dije, “La tentaci�n” es m�s que una novela rom�ntico er�tica, es una historia de traiciones, de decepciones, y tambi�n tiene un fuerte componente de intriga y misterio. As� que no ser�a justo compararla con otra obra existente en el mercado. Es una obra de ficci�n, propiamente caracterizada.
Debo se�alar que la autora destaca en la narraci�n, sabe llevar la historia y ha construido un libro que empieza bien y termina bien, el pr�logo es realmente impactante y el ep�logo nos invita a querer m�s; la situaci�n final me dej� con la expectativa y las ganas de saber m�s de los personajes y la historia que viene con ellos. Ha sido un grato inicio de saga y creo que leer� las dem�s novelas que la componen.
No hay que olvidar el estilo limpio y cuidado de Mestre, no encontraremos aqu� los lugares comunes y las constantes repeticiones de frases que en la obra de James son frecuentes (no se me olvida las veces que la frase “la diosa que llevo dentro” se repite en James), Mestre ha hecho la tarea b�sica de un escritor, cuidar que la narraci�n fluya sin tropiezos sin errores en la redacci�n.
Esperemos que esta autora nueva siga escribiendo, talento no le falta y tiene pasi�n por la narraci�n.

Una tentacion entretenida

Pens� por el t�tulo que este ser�a un libro de uno de los cuatro ‘Brothers” pero no, esta es la historia de Claire y Marco. Una primera parte que se queda sin un final y sin aclarar todos los secretos del protagonista. Me parece que tiene algunas similitudes a Extasis de Maya Banks pero (siempre hay un pero) la escritora de forma magistral nos va dando a cuenta gotas los secretos de la historia sorprendi�ndonos a cada paso. Lo que mantiene al lector entretenido y queriendo saber m�s. Inclusive la verdadera personalidad de Marco no parece hasta casi la mitad de la historia y en todo este tiempo la escritora supo ocultarlo muy bien para sorprender al lector. A pesar de ser la t�pica historia del hombre controlador obsesionado con la chica sumisa la escritora integra en la historia elementos sorpresa que la hacen diferente.
A pesar que la escritora es muy buena, buena narrativa y coherente me pareci� que algunos casos las descripciones de lugares, ropa o comida fueron muy prolongadas cuando realmente queremos saber de los protagonistas. El erotismo est� bien trabajado y no lo encontr� excesivo. Inclusive la primera escena que sorprende por la diferencia de edades, muy bien lograda. Tiene muchos errores tipogr�ficos e inclusive intercambio de nombres. Hay un personaje que lo llaman Alfonso y Alfredo en la misma parte. Deben revisarla. Al final tengo que decir que es interesante, entretenida, si le gustan estas historias llenas de erotismo con un protagonista torturado por un pasado que no sabemos esta es su historia.

Definitivamente NO me agrada que nos dejen sin la continuacion, despise de pasar horas continuas de lectura!
