Fast read but invaluable resource.
By Elizabeth Staley
Really a good book. I was scared when I got it, because it's very small, so I thought there couldn't be anything in it that I hadn't found from a few college courses and reading about color on-line. However I found that I'd purchased a book that is not only a quick read but also a very handy reference with a lot of great tips that I keep referring back to! If you're a painter, this book is going to be a big help, because it specifically goes over mixing paint. But even as a digital artist I found a lot of good tips!

"Inspector Zhang Gets His Wish" I really liked this story
By Eugene W. Moyer
Story One: "Inspector Zhang Gets His Wish" I really liked this story. I liked it because it pays homage to Christie's Poirot. I also liked it because it quietly enumerates the reasonable possibilities of a "locked room mystery." This has a traditional thoughtful inspector, exercising his "little gray cells" to solve a riddle. When Zhang specifies the traditional explanations of a "locked room mystery," his ratiocination brings to mind the techniques of history's first true literary detective--Poe's C. Auguste Dupin.

Story Two: "Lead Balloon." I also liked this story because it shows the damage ( in this case, fatal damage ) that can result from the petty exercise of authority, and the small-minded but malignant pettiness that characterizes those seeking revenge. In this case, both the initial pettiness and the malignant pettiness resulting in a lead-poisoning murder, are feminine in nature. But men are capable of such small-minded revenge too. "Lead Balloon" is a nice, simple story about the essential ugliness and mediocrity of human nature.

Story Three: "Decree Absolute" This is a disaster of a story, impoverished in conception--read that as cliched in conception, and disastrous in execution. The writing is primitive and boring, grammatically incorrect in numerous cases, and just downright amateurish. This is a very harsh assessment, and I sincerely HOPE that this is NOT one of your stories written under a pseudonym. After reading this story, I found myself thinking: "Why the hell did I just spend time reading this story, when life is so short? I could have been in my studio sculpting or lying in bed reading Updike instead. . . .

Story Four: "The Corporate Wolf" I enjoyed this story from start to finish. It has a breezy, cynical tone throughout, and the cynicism plays nicely with my own personal psyche.
The way the details of the supposed nano-particle toxin debacle are discussed is very nicely done. I liked the realism of the sundry considerations. There is also a good "O'Henry" style of twist in the concluding scene of the story. A well-done effort.

Story Five: "The Murder Blog of Wilde Diabolito" The longest--and probably the best--of the the collection's first six stories. The conception is bold, and the boldness of the conception is executed almost perfectly. It is a VERY original technique to take a Wilde poem, "The Ballad of Reading Gaol," ( one of my favorite ballad / lyrical poems ) and use its first series of lines to form the basis of a murder story. I don't think I've ever seen this done before in a "murder" short story. What is particularly nicely done is the chilling handling of the DL cyber-scene website. I didn't see any flaws in this story. But it is a DANGEROUS story. It is dangerous because it is the kind of contemporary story that will appeal to lonely, contemporary misfits, the kind of impressionable, unstable losers who shoot people in shopping malls or schools at random etc. I could easily see this type of story appealing more than it should to misfit losers such as a youthful Joe Salvino, for example. But I was never a misfit loser, and I read "The Murder Blog of Wilde Diabolito" purely for its entertainment value, much as I periodically watch episodes of "The Twilight Zone" around Halloween. Incidentally, if "The Twilight Zone" had still been around as a contemporary TV program, this story would have made a great hour-long episode. I could even see this story being made into a chilling, creepily effective full-length feature film. This story should be peddled by its author to the Hollywood set. . . . An excellent effort.

Story Six: "A Sticky Situation" I also liked this story. Of the first six stories, I placed this story number three in quality, behind Diabolito and the Corporate Wolf, just ahead of the Inspector Zhang story. As I was reading it, I kept thinking of the old Elliot Ness "Untouchables" series of my childhood, back in the early sixties. This story is equipped with very effective, realistic "Godfather"-type dialog.

Story Seven: "The Madmen of Geylang" As I read this story, I felt unmoved; I had neither a positive nor a negative feeling about having read it. I just coasted through it as breezily as if I were browsing through a sports page in a local newspaper. It's not particularly imaginative or well-written; neither is it badly written. It's a hum-ho effort.

Story Eight: "The Lost History of Shadows" This was a much more interesting story than story seven. The story uses a kind of "expostulation" technique, the way, perhaps, that Perry Mason might do a lot of "surprise explanation" at the back end of an old Stanley Gardner "who dunnit." The dialog is nicely realistic, and nothing is forced. The characters, in their essential ugliness, are very believable, as is the situation.

Story Nine: This is another story that I HOPE you didn't write under a pseudonym. I read the story twice--to make sure that there was nothing I might have missed after the first go. I didn't like the story at all the first time I read it, and after having done so a second time, I still didn't like it. This story is the kind of story that is full of gibberish imagery that some authors--especially young self-induglent authors--expect mature readers to take seriously. Such authors are expecting too much. I got the impression that the author who wrote it had the hunger to be compactly profound--it's a fairly short piece--without the requisite talent to match that ambition. It would be like Joyce Carol Oates trying to write like Updike--ambition to excel can only compensate so much for an inherent lack of talent; will-power has its limits.

Story Ten: "The House on Tomb Lane" As I read this story, I felt a similar indifference to what I experienced while reading "The Madman of Geylang." It's a rather routine story of revenge which has a few dramatic moments towards its end. One thing, though, I DID like about the story was the sentence structure; the author uses compact. declarative sentences to push you along through the narrative, it's almost as if you're reading the personal diaries of the main characters bent on revenge. This style of writing is the best way to go for this genre of story.

Story Eleven: "The First Time" I loved this story; it's a great little piece, proving that a story needn't be long to be compelling or profound. Of all the stories in the book, it has by far the most polished objective narration. The narrative is not only polished; it also does a hell of a good job portraying the dazed mentality of the victim. Each of the included details in the narrative effectively distills essence--the mark of a good story-teller / writer. This story, along with the chilling "Murder Blog of Wilde Diabolito,"The Corporate Wolf," and "The Lost History of Shadows," was / were my favorite stories in the collection.

Story Twelve: "Unnatural Causes"Unnatural Causes" has a nice "double-agent" kind of twist to it, because there are two private investigators tangled up in the story--spying and spied-upon. The style of both the narrative and the dialog is forties / fifties--"hard-boiled." The writing actually reminds me of the terse, cynical mood of Robert Mitchum in "film-noir" flicks; it also reminds me a little bit of those old Mickey Spillane paperbacks in the early and middle sixties.

Crime Scene Singapore - Where You have a Lot of Light, ...
By Miki101.Michaela :0)))
... You'll also find a lot of shadows.
This old saying should be the motto of the collection of short stories which will introduce the interested readers to a world of crimes noboby expects to find in "squeaky-clean" Singapore.
For the 10 authors it has surely been a bit of a challenge to produce crimes and felons intelligent enough to get often away with their misdeeds. And my personal opinion is that my expectations have been amply surpassed!

So let us take a look at this broad view of good, old "Singa-Bore's" crime scene...

The collection opens with a closed room mystery where old-fashioned "Inspector Zhang Gets His Wish" to resolve a crime with the help of his ample knowledge of criminal fiction. And it's written with all the tricks and twists a master writer like Stephen Leather has in his repertoire...
Lee Ee Leen shows us in her "Lead Ballon" how resourceful pupils may answer to the sometimes elevated pressures in high school...
Renowned local novelist Dawn Farnham presents in "Decree Absolute" an ingenious version of divorce, Singapore style...
A typically Singaporean crime situated in one of the big enterprises has been masterly elaborated by novelist and poet Pranav S. Joshi, who shows us the many ways "a Corporate Wolf" can act...
Chris Mooney-Singh's "Murder Blog of Wilde Diabolito" takes us posting by posting into a lurid cyber world where cyber sex substitutes the "real thing", but the very real crime is inspired by an Oscar Wilde pamphlet poem - an 1897 equivalent of an online blog...
In "a Sticky Situation" are the protagonists who commit a "crime" which makes fun of one of the most unique Singaporean legal restrictions in this persiflage written by the aspiring local author Alaric Leong...
With "the Madman of Geylang" the journalist, author and editor Zafar Anjum takes us into a future Singapore where also the personal relations are strictly regulated, with the most devastating consequences for certain individuals...
In "the Lost Hystory of Shadows" has not only gone lost the knowledge of a brutal slaughter that took place on St.Lucy's Day of 1938, but also the moniker our Lion City had in those prewar days: Sin Galore. But Singapore-based writer Aaron Ang describes meticulously the repercussions this crime will have in the present...
Can an entire city feel "Nostalgia" and eradiate it onto her inhabitants, creating the right atmosphere for an awful crime? That's the very original question full-time poet Ng Yi-Sheng poses to the readers...
In "the House on Tomb Lane" a brutal and slow killing has been committed to a young Filipina maid and her relatives are bringing justice in this moving story written by Dawn Farnham, also known for her historical novels set in Singapore...
The gripping story of "the First Time" told by Carolyn Camoens let the readers decide if it's the crime that's worse or maybe the knowledge and negation of it...
And as the collection opens with a story of a Singapore Police Inspector, it closes with the tale of a Private Investigator. Richard Lord, the world-renowned author and editor takes us through the "Innatural causes" that cause ... death.

Logically there are other great authors who write very good novels about Singapore-based crime investigators like - for example - Shamini Flint with her Inspector Singh or Jake Needham with his Inspector Samuel Tay.
But an anthology has only so many pages and is meant to be an appetizer, a bait to hook the readers, to draw the interest to the - existing - Singapore Crime Scene.
Because - as the local law enforcement people like to remind: LOW crime does not mean NO crime...
And how true ist that ... :)

Some were quite good indeed, some were rather average
By S. Fox
I posted this review elsewhere, and I'll put it here as well.

I read another collection of crime stories set in Singapore just before this, "Singapore Noir", and most of the things I said in that review are entirely relevant to this review, because they're very similar books.

As with most collections of short stories, you're inevitably going to find stories stronger than others, and that's the case here. Some were quite good indeed, some were rather average, and some had strong starts but weak finishes.

If I could give this a 3.5 out of 5 then I would, but overall, I enjoyed my time with this book without being left exactly speechless with amazement by anything I read here. It's a quick read and worth doing if you have a particular interest in Singapore.

Not dead yet. Not kidnapped, captured, tortured or killed. But he's come bloody close...Meet 'Big' Phil Campion. To his fellow operators he's a private military contractor. To you or me he's a mercenary, a soldier of fortune, a gun for hire selling violence to the highest bidder. But to Big Phil it's all just another chapter in a life spent fighting in the shadows. Abandoned. Run-away. Half-beaten to death. Blown-up. Locked up. And all before the age of twenty. This is the incredible true story of how Phil Campion survived all of that, and went on to complete Commando selection, Para selection, and to join the SAS - before fighting as a mercenary in the world's toughest war zones. Undertaking deniable operations, freeing hostages and escaping terrorists hell bent on revenge - the dangers and insane risks of life as a private military operator eclipsed even those of waging war in an SAS Sabre Squadron. Big Phil's story of life on the private military circuit ('The Circuit') is a high-octane blend of chasing fast bucks in a Wild West industry, whilst always staying one step ahead of the bad guys. 'I've often been asked if I've killed anyone. My answer: I didn't shoot to miss.' Phil Campion, January 2010.

A Consumate Warrior
By Allan M. Lees
I had the honor of meeting Phil at a recent UK event that reproduces UKSF selection marches and is staffed by ex-SAS and SBS. Some SF guys are very discrete (the "gray man" approach) while others are more ebullient. Phil is definitely in the latter category but like all people who've achieved hard things he's got his ego well under control. There's a huge difference between taking pleasure in telling a great story and just being a self-aggrandizing twat. Phil tells a great story. And he's also exactly the sort of man you want on your side when the brown stuff hits the rotating device.

Unlike so many of the SAS "tell-all" books that have been written following the runaway success of B20, Phil doesn't really cover his experience of Selection (strictly speaking, "Special Forces Aptitude Test") nor any of his time in the SAS. Doubtless this saved a lot of hassle with the MoD and ensured that he could get his book into print without violating any written agreements barring serving and former UKSF personnel from disclosing anything about their time in their units. So instead he focuses on his childhood and his post-service career as a PMC.

Some of us had childhoods that were far from ideal. But reading Phil's account of his childhood puts everything into perspective: the victim of near-constant abuse from everyone who should have been nurturing him, he was forced from an early age to develop the kinds of psychological and physical skills that later enabled him to excel in the military. At the same time, his self-reliant mentality meant that he never quite fit in with the regular Army's approach to life in uniform. While we may never be able to read about the operations Phil participated in as a blade, it is pretty apparent that he really comes into his own when running an embassy security team in Kabul right after the fall of the Taliban. Characteristically Phil's account focuses on the action and he doesn't build himself up in his account, yet reading between the lines it's pretty evident that not only did he create a world-class security team from scratch in highly adverse conditions but that his team was almost entirely the results of his own efforts. His combination of good drills, proper SOPs, and acutely developed "street smarts" enabled him to avoid making the mistakes other less experienced CP teams were making (and continue to make....).

Phil is a raconteur and so the book jumps around in time and in tense. I rather suspect a lot of editing was required to take his initial draft and fashion a reasonably coherent flow of events. That said, the result is immensely readable and enjoyable and provides insight into the mentality of elite operators. While Hollywood is empty puff and what you see on screen will get you rapidly dead in real life, Phil's accounts give a sense of the degree to which even the best operators are subject to luck sometimes. He's also unstinting in his admissions about feeling real fear - despite the title, Phil is no emotion-free blowhard. His writing makes it clear that everyone, even the hardest men, feel fear and rightly so. Indeed, fear and its precursor are important combat indicators. Fearless warriors tend to die fast. The key is the difference between feeling fear and showing it. As Phil rightly notes, in a combat situation any display of fear is deadly. Immediate action keeps you breathing when the chips are down.

Meeting Phil in real life, I was struck by how similar he was to another warrior I'd known years ago when I was training in various martial arts. Back then I briefly trained under Gary Spiers, a huge half-Maori who combined the same flair for story-telling with consummate physical prowess and utter commitment when required to fight. Gary fought on the UK karate team and worked as a security consultant; he had a wealth of anecdotes but just like Phil they were all about scrapes and getting through, not about puffing himself up or slapping himself on the back. Gary died several years back after a colorful life; hopefully Phil will go on to enjoy his old age. I'm sure his grand-children would love to hear his many stories.

For the rest of us, if you're only going to read one "military" book this year, make it Born Fearless. The title's misleading, the stories therein are definitely spot-on.

Like good combat stories? Here's a 5-star one for you.
By Rodney Doven
Great stuff! Excellent, engaging stories of real combat. More importantly (from my perspective), in the parts where he's not fighting, he puts down a lot of wisdom in an easy-to-understand way, showing a deep understanding of combat mindset and the psychology of violence. This is all done in a non-presumptuous, almost humble, way - impressive considering what he's done. In fact, he talks about some really in-depth stuff so casually it's easy to miss the depth of what he's talking about.

But through all this, he keeps it fun. There's laughs all through the book - stuff so crazy you can't help but laugh. Good read all round, and one of the best combat books I've read.

Great British special forces perspective
By Edward Earl Greer
Great book. Gives a great perspective of things from a British commando's point of view. Phil Campion's writing style is great. There are points in the book that had me laughing out loud. His approach to handling dangerous situations without panicking or freaking out speaks of the rare qualities these guys have that few (including myself) people possess. A refreshing change of pace from the other books I have read about the American special forces.

Who Is This Man?: The Unpredictable Impact of the Inescapable Jesus, by John Ortberg

Jesus' impact on our world is highly unlikely, widely inescapable, largely unknown, and decidedly double-edged. It is unlikely in light of the severe limitations of his earthly life; it is inescapable because of the range of his impact; it is unknown because history doesn't connect dots; and it is doubled-edged because his followers have wreaked so much havoc, often in his name.

He is history's most familiar figure, yet he is the man no one knows. His impact on the world is immense and non-accidental. From the Dark Ages to Post-Modernity, he is the Man who won't go away.

And yet... you can miss him in historical lists for many reasons, maybe the most obvious being the way he lived his life. He did not loudly and demonstrably defend his movement in the spirit of a rising political or military leader. He did not lay out a case that history would judge his brand of belief superior in all future books.

His life and teaching simply drew people to follow him. He made history by starting in a humble place, in a spirit of love and acceptance, and allowing each person space to respond.

His vision of life continues to haunt and challenge humanity. His influence has swept over history, bringing inspiration to what has happened in art, science, government, medicine, and education; he has taught humans about dignity, compassion, forgiveness, and hope.

An enthralling, revolutionary and totally awesome book!
By David Carreon
"Who Is This Man?" challenges the reader to get "outside" of Christianity and to try to think of Jesus as any other man, one separate from theology and the miraculous. With familiar and (more often) unfamiliar facts of history, Ortberg challenges us to take seriously the positive revolutions that occurred because of Jesus in learning, compassion, women's empowerment and sexuality. He traces the foundation of the University, the Hospital and Civil Rights to Jesus. He paints the man Jesus as an inexplicable paradox: a vagrant who inspired the greatest architecture of our race, one crucified as a slave who founded a kingdom that remains to this day.

This is one of those rare worldview books, one that is able to marshal a large and diverse set of data from many sources and present a common story that explains the world we live in. Gladwell does this skillfully in social science. GK Chesterton does it in The Everlasting Man. Ortberg does it here. The writing itself is spectacular, even when compared to Ortberg's other writing. The book moves well and the chapters flow smoothly. It is somewhat academic but by far the most readable book of its kind.

The story is about the human condition and all variety of witnesses come forward. It is a fascinating courtroom where testimony from both Augustine of Hippo and Conan the Barbarian are admissible. It is immensely interesting to hear the story unfold with contributions by first-class scholars, Saints of Old, and Ortberg's own eclectic life experience. Ortberg has the rare ability to see symbol and prophecy in the otherwise too-familiar Gospel stories. He is able to bring the events to life, explain them in their historical context, and show how Jesus' life and teachings were a violent and absurd challenge to the ancient world.

This book bestows on readers, both secular and religious, fresh eyes with which to consider the central figure of history and to ask "Who Is This Man?"

Fantastic Book About The Historical Impact of Jesus of Nazareth!
By chanchanchepon "Billy Williams"
I ordered a copy of this book, Who Is This Man?, online, and when it arrived, one of the first things I noticed was the litany of blurbs about the book. Many authors and theologians who I deeply respect and appreciate had written a snippet about the value they saw in what Ortberg's book had to say. People as diverse as Dallas Willard, N. T. Wright, and Shaine Claiborne had good things to say about this book, and remarkably, former US Secretary of State, Condoleezza Rice wrote the foreword to the book.

But the book didn't stop being quality at the end of the foreword. In fact, the array of comments had served the author and the book well by building a solid foundation from which to build and move forward. The book is not an apologetic for Jesus being God. It is not a book that lays out steps to salvation or anything like that. It is more of an examination of the truly unpredictable impact that Jesus has had in the twenty centuries since his life.

Chapter after chapter, Ortberg sets the stage for what was considered normative at the time of Jesus, and how Jesus' life has shaped for generations from then to now what values we tend to admire, how we treat others, and even how we have arrived at some of the systems we have today, like our education system.

I am really tempted to go into detail regarding some of the key insights of each chapter, but I don't want to give too much away for you. I will say this. John Ortberg lifts up historical context around many of Jesus' stories told in the gospels that allow us to see how truly profound his statements and teachings were. He also builds a compelling case that Jesus, through a relatively short period of time in his life was able to exert more influence on the way we live and think today than any person before him and really any person since.

If you enjoy historical biography, or if you want to learn more about the life and legacy of Jesus of Nazareth in a concise format, I highly recommend this book. I found it to be inspiring and life giving as I pursue this life of faith in Jesus the Messiah. It made me want to pour over scriptures with renewed vigor to study the life and example of how Jesus lived his life, and to work more zealously to live this life as He would live it, to live my life in service for others, and to truly love my neighbors.

May you enjoy your reading of this short book that illustrates some of the profound and unpredictable impact of the life of Jesus. I know I certainly did.

How Has Jesus Changed The World?
By Daniel L. Marler
If you were to ask people, "who is the most significant and influential person who has ever lived?" many would say, "Jesus." Even people who are not Christians or people who are not particularly religious would be inclined to say that Jesus is the most influential person who has ever lived.

I would be quick to agree with that answer. But if you were to say to people, "give me specific examples of how Jesus has impacted areas like the arts, or education, or deeply ingrained attitudes about humility, or forgiveness, or the treatment of children," most of us would probably not be able to offer specific details.

In this book, "Who Is This Man?" by John Ortberg, the specific details are provided.

I find the content of this book to be interesting, compelling and, even, exciting--I should probably admit that as a Christian I have a fairly strong bias in favor of Jesus. But when a book is really good it also has to with the fact that the author of the book is a wonderfully gifted communicator. Even with my bias in favor of Jesus, I have read a number of books about him that were... um... well... a bit dull.

That is not the case with "Who Is This Man?" John knows how to tell stories, he knows how to use humor well, he knows how to communicate in a way that resonates with a reader (at least, he knows how to do it with this reader).

I read approximately 80 books every year. I can confidently tell you this is one of the best books I've read in the past 4 to 6 weeks.

(I'm kidding... it's one of the best books I've read this year! Seriously, it is.)

Engineering Iron and Stone: Understanding Structural Analysis and Design Methods of the Late 19th Century, by Thomas E. Boothby

In the late 1800s new design opportunities to serve business and transportation abounded, and the civil engineering profession responded with efficient design methods to meet the surging demands.

Engineering Iron and Stone: Understanding Structural Analysis and Design Methods of the Late 19th Century presents a comprehensive explanation of the empirical, graphical, and analytical design techniques used during this period in the construction of both large and small buildings and bridges in wood, stone, brick, and iron. Drawing on a career-long fascination with how structural engineers do their work, Thomas Boothby provides specific examples of these analysis and design methods applied to arches, girders, trusses, beams, and columns. The numerous calculations, drawings, and photographs, both historic and contemporary, illustrate the application of these techniques to a wide range of structures.

While major civil engineering works of the Gilded Age are acknowledged, Boothby focuses on the smaller, more ordinary local projects that today’s engineers might encounter and analyzes the significant body of engineering design that went into their construction. Boothby also points out the historic value in preserving the engineering techniques and ideas of that era. The rapidity of computation and the intimate relationship between the structure and its analysis have been lost in the numerically intensive analytical methods currently employed.

Undertaking the historic preservation or rehabilitation of structures from the late 19th century can be challenging. Understanding the original design intent, however, can aid in a successful outcome. The quick and computationally efficient methods described in this book can assist present day engineers in understanding the behavior of these structures and give insight into their actual performance.

Thomas E. Boothby, Ph.D, P.E., R.A., is a professor of architectural engineering in the Department of Architectural Engineering at the Pennsylvania State University, where he has taught since 1992. He has written numerous journal papers and is currently researching the history and application of empirical design.
