Extraordinary insights from one of the greatest thinkers of our time

"On Education" is a fascinating discussion by the Italian editor, Ricardo Mazzeo with Zygmunt Bauman, Professor Emeritus of Sociology at the University of Leeds. Professor Bauman is the famed octogenarian theorist of the 'liquid modern' (postmodern) era whose influential writings have inspired many within the anti-globalization movement. In this accessible book, Mr. Mazzeo and Professor Bauman discuss the struggles of youth, education and neoliberalism with extraordinary clarity, insight and perspective.

Mr. Mazzeo challenges Professor Bauman with twenty issues including life-long education, immigration, consumerism, culture, austerity, financial meltdown, the London riots of 2011, the Arab Spring, the Internet, and more. The articles consist of thoughtful written (not verbal) exchanges that range from a few pages to as many as 15 pages each. Professor Bauman's extraordinary life experiences and decades of study allow him to reflect on our current predicament as only he can.

Full of wisdom and hope, Mr. Mazzeo and Professor Bauman's brief but engaging book is highly recommended to everyone who wants to better understand our liquid modern world.

Between Mixophilia and Mixophobia

Zygmunt Bauman (b. 1925) has enjoyed a long academic and writing career in his native Poland, Israel, and Leeds. He was forced out of Poland in 1968 as a result of Anti-semitism. He contined his prolific writing in English, his third language. Bauman began his career and remains heavily influenced by Marxism. He has become best-known for his critique of postmodernism and for his use of the metaphors of "liquid" and "liquidity" or "software" as opposed to "hardware" to describe the modern world. His books have titles such as "Liquid Modernity", "Liquid Life", "Liquid Love", "Liquid Fear", "Liquid Times". Bauman is currently Professor Emeritus of Sociology at the University of Leeds. I have not read Bauman before but became interested in this book because it claimed to discuss the changing role of education in the modern world.

"On Education" is a series of twenty short exchanges of views between Bauman and Riccardo Mazzeo, an editor at the Italian publisher Edizioni Erickson. I had no prior knowledge about Mazzeo. In each of the chapters, Mazzeo begins the discussion by identifying the subject matter and by making a brief statement. Bauman follows with a longer statement in which he comments on Mazzeo and expands upon his own views. Part of the problem with this approach is that in context it is static. There are no real differences of opinion between Mazzeo and Bauman that could create an exchange. Bauman generally simply reinforce and elaborates the position taken by his interlocutor.

Another issue with the book is its scope. Many of twenty chapters do discuss education and its role at the primary, secondary and college levels, and a great deal of the discussion is thoughtful. But the book is much more sweeping. It begins with an exchange called "Between Mixophilia and Mixophobia" which discusses attitudes towards immigration once an assimilationist model is discarded. Mixophobics fear involvement with foreigners while mixophiliacs find joy in an atmosphere consisting of many diverse elements. Bauman and Mazzeo want to change the contours of the dichotomy. Part of their discussion involves the recognition of difference among groups within the school system. The discussion focuses on Europe but it would apply as well to the United States.

Besides the emphasis of multiculturalism, the book emphasizes economics and change. Several chapters discuss the financial meltdown and near-depression while several chapters discuss as well the increasing disparity in income between rich and poor people and the hardening of class lines. There are chapters about people taking to the streets as part of the "Arab Spring" and as part of London riots in the summer of 2011. Bauman and Mazzeo discuss religion, monotheism and the need for transcendence even though neither of them is creedally religious. They have important things to say about family and community. But overall, the topic pervading the book is consumerism -- people defining themselves by quick fixes and by pleasure and by increasing consumption.

Bauman displays formidable erudition. It is a pleasure to read his thoughts on a varied group of writers and intellectuals including Jose Saramongo, Gregory Bateson, George Steiner, Hans Gadamer,Martha Nussbaum, Amin Maalouf, Richard Sennett, and many others, including current European writers with whom I am unfamiliar.

The scope of the volume is far too broad and the discussion too free-wheeling and too ideological to be persuasive. With each chapter receiving only a few pages, the treatment can only be cursory. Bauman displays great knowledge and frequent insight, as when he laments the passing of family closeness, a spirit of community, and sexual restraint. The tone however tends more often to be dogmatic and premptory and the writing purple and polemical. The book seems to reach preordained conclusions, and it fails to grapple with specifics and with alternative ways of understanding problems. The overall conclusion, that change may come from directions and sources that cannot immediately be forseen is surprisingly modest.

The bluster and dogmatism of this book left me troubled and unconvinced, although I did learn from some of the details. This book might not be the best introduction to Bauman. Possibly Bauman might be better approached through one of his longer works, in his own voice. He might benefit from having the opportunity to present his views in depth rather than in the sketchy conclusory manner of this book. Overall, I found this book disappointing.

Using Gita as a guide for daily living

I bought the Gita along with the Dhammapada on amazon. I also have the other book in the series (Upanishads). It has been a great experience for me to study these books and use them as a guide for daily living.

Eknath Easwaran's introduction to the concepts of Hinduism is outstanding. The description of Jnana Yoga (path of knowledge), Bhakti Yoga (path of devotion) and Karma Yoga(path of selfless action) is lucid and inspires one to practice. I have combined my readings with regular meditation - Contemplation on the verses, how to apply them and applying effort towards practicing them in your life makes your life meaningful. For readers who are new to Hindu/Buddhist concepts of karma and reincarnation , the introduction has a wealth of information. The description of the three gunas (Tamas, Rajas, Sattva) that influence our personality is exemplary. Having a little bit of a background in Sanskrit, I can draw parallels between 'Sattva guna' and the popular Buddhist term 'BodhiSattva'. I also appreciate the spiritual plane in which the text describes the conversation between Arjuna and Krishna - as something every individual needs to have with his Self in the depths of consciousness. Each chapter in the book is preceded by chapter introductions that add a lot of value to the text.

In short, a great book with meaningful and practical teachings which can be practiced by a person on any path. I consider myself fortunate to have had the opportunity to read this book.

The Bhagavad Gita is incredible.

A principal book of Hinduism, inspiration to Gandhi and overall “must-read” for any big thinking seeker, if you haven’t read it yet, I *highly* recommend you add it to your list.

The Bhagavad Gita is believed to have been written between the 5th and 2nd centuries BCE and its 700 verses are part of the longer Mahabharata.

The content of the Gita consists of a conversation between Krishna, the supreme manifestation of the Lord Himself, and the warrior prince Arjuna before the start of the Kurukshetra war. Krishna is advising Arjuna as he hesitates in moral confusion over the challenge of going to war with his own family.

Viewed allegorically, the war represents the perennial struggle between good and evil within each of us and Krishna’s wisdom points the way to following the yogic path of living in harmony with universal laws as we strive to live our highest truths.

India's Main Gift to the World

Eknath Easwaran, the translator of that ancient Hindu classic called
"Bhagavad Gita", informs us early on of his opinion that the epic he
has translated, and apparently made it his life's work to comment
upon and to propagate, is India's main gift to the world.

This brilliant, disciplined, and witty academic scholar of literature,
might be characterized as the Guru of Anti-hippiedom. His modern
hero is M.K. Gandhi, "the Mahatma", who late in life was inspired by
the Gita to transform himself into the saint who freed India of British
colonial rule, and did so without violence.

It seems to be Easwaran's mission to create a quiet and peaceful
altruistic army of Gandhis who will save the world. The writing is
supremely clear and compelling. I am amazed that Eknath Easwaran,
who died very old in 1999, is not widely known. He writes from the
vantage point of a thoughtful Indian mystic, but brings together and
unifies the finest in the views of the main religions of the world today:
Hinduism, Buddhism, Christianity, Judaism, Islam, atheistic/agnostic
humanism.

The ultimate injunction Easwaran offers is that meditation, rightly
understood and practiced, can connect humans with the Self, which
is the unifying deity at the heart of all creation, and in this way it can
transform its practitioners into effective saviors of our planet and the
sacred life which inhabits it. Easwaran is eloquently colloquial, witty,
and convincing. He has inspired me to read other works of his, further
elaborating on his message in this one.

About the Author

Cathy Whitlock is an interior designer, journalist, and the author ofRe-de-sign. She is a contributing writer for Traditional Home and The Huffington Post and her design, film, lifestyle, and celebrity profiles have appeared in American Airlines Celebrated Living, Architectural Digest, Glamour (UK), and Veranda magazine, among others. Her blog, Cinema Style, chronicles the world of art direction in film. She lives in Nashville, Tennessee.

The Art Directors Guild is the successor to several organizations, the earliest formed in 1924 in Hollywood. The Guild is both a professional society and a labor organization, recognized as IATSE Local 800. Its 2,000 members practice the art-crafts of: production design, art direction, illustration, set design, model making, graphic design, matte art, scenic art, and title art. Thomas A. Walsh, a narrative designer for film, television, and the Broadway stage, has served as the Guild's president since 2002.

Splendid, with exceptions

The product copy above does not do justice to this splendid and sumptuous doorstopper on Hollywood art direction. The photographs are the payoff here, literally hundreds of production stills detailing on-the-set constructions and activity. My eye tells me that I have not seen most of these photos before in other Hollywood books. I think the book would serve better if it cut off after the 1970s and included more on the silent era and 1930s when the concept of art direction in film was nurtured and flourished. The 80s are focused on special effects and much of the new millennium material look like nothing more than Town & Country layouts. Nonetheless, the bulk of the book will take the Golden Era Hollywood fan to another place and time in American history, creative and socially.

This lifts the curtain on movie magic

The introduction "pay no attention to the man behind the curtain" (from "The Wizard of Oz"), is the first inkling the reader has that a magical journey is in store. Besides archiving a treasure-trove of movie history spanning the last 100 years, this book is also a stunning tribute to interior design and set decoration. As breath-taking as these photo's are, and no doubt valuable because they're rare and/or never-before-published originals, the stories behind the stories are equally riveting, and a salute to Hollywood. Especially - as the author notes - "to its unsung hero's and heroines": the people behind the curtain who brought their talents to the silver screen for all of us to revel in. Following the yellow brick road in this must-own book will delight, enchant, and surprise reader's from all walks of life.

Lovely to look at, delightful to hold

This book is a fitting tribute to one of the most vital - and, too often, unexamined - elements of a film's community: production design and set decoration. Spanning all major genres and every decade since film's inception, Designs on Film reflects the author's obvious love of set design and a profound understanding of the craft's evolution. And the photos are stunning.

I was delighted to see the inclusion of William Cameron Menzies's and Vincent Korda's sets for Things to Come (1936), the long and accomplished careers of Robert Boyle and John DeCuir and the emergence of art deco as a major influence on the look of 1920s and 1930s cinema. (An added treat is a rather revealing photo of Bruce, the troublesome shark from Jaws, 1975.)

As with many chronicles of this sort, there are always things one would like to see that aren't included: the futuristic world for Just Imagine! (1930) springs to mind (though it is a godawful movie). But who cares when what is here tells the story beautifully, with each film's atmosphere freshly rendered and nicely documented.

Designs on Film is a great reference for the film buff and a terrific primer for the neophyte.
