George B. Schaller is a senior conservationist at the Wildlife Conservation Society and Vice President of Panthera, a foundation devoted to the conservation of wild cats.�He is the author of many books, including The Mountain Gorilla and The Last Panda, both published by the University of Chicago Press.

Fascinating story

This is the fascinating story of the author's expedition to study Mountain Gorillas in 1959-60. Told as a detailed narrative, it is as much an adventure story as a scientific analysis.
From the riveting first encounter with a family of gorillas through the identification of several distinct groups, their daily routine is revealed. The gentleness that Schaller found dispelled many long held myths about Gorilla behavior.
Beyond the gorillas, this is also the complete story of a region, its people and other flora and fauna. The issues of preservation of these animals and their habitat are much the same as those faced today.
This is the documentation of an important pioneering work that paved the way for Fossey and other researchers who would follow. Illustrated with photos and maps, it is a compelling read from cover to cover.

A Look at the life of Gorillas through Schaller's Eyes

George Schaller takes you with him as he goes to the Virunga Volcanoes to study the Gorillas. He takes a look at the gorillas, but with a more personal approach than with "The Mountain Gorilla". Instead of pouring out scientific facts, he shares with you some of his feelings and experiences as he watched them. This was a refreshing look at the life of gorillas from his own perspective. I would recommend it to anyone with an interest in Gorillas.

Wonderful Gorilla study and more

This is a wonderful combination of anthropology, history, ecology, and gorilla studies. Schaller writes in a captivating and inviting style. I loved that he presented his datea on gorillas, the focus of his presence in Africa, within his own experience there. Imbeded within was ecological commentary expectable with endandered creatures; however, Schaller managed to make this contribute favorably to his book rather than the whining diatribe it could have been.

Highly recommendable for both social reading as well as a suppliment to an anthropology class.

Originally from Scotland, Professor Fred Watson is now a leading astronomer based at the Anglo-Australian Observatory in Coonabarabran and has his own popular weekly programme on Australia's ABC radio. The best book for editorial design insight

I've been looking for a book that concentrated on Editorial Design.
I am very happy with this book. It presents a progressive sequential explanation of what a magazine/publication
is, it's parts, the language, terms and functions and roles of the Design team for a publication.

The examples are very good and the case studies represent some of the best known names in Editorial design history.
Varied styles, topics and genres are presented in a clear and concise way.

A great book for inspiration and for a better understanding of any designer interested in print and publications.

Good solid introduction to editorial design

I'm new to editorial design (coming from a web background) so this book was one of the first ones I read about designing magazines and other print media. The information is very well written and researched and I learned quite a bit about the industry. The images and examples are ok, but could be updated with more recent and better quality examples.

What I like most about the book is the diversity of ideas presented. Many of which I would never have created on my own. It is out the box thinking at its best. You might not use any of the ideas but the theories behind the ideas will take you far from where you would have gone without reading it.

About the Author
Philip A. Wheeler, Ph. D, is the technical advisor and consulting agronomist for Crop Services International (CSI), a soil testing lab and consulting service in Grand Rapids, Michigan. Prior to his current position, he, along with Ronald Ward and Richard Vaughan, founded TransNational AGronomy. In addition to consulting, Wheeler has worked for many years in the areas of research and development of agronomic products and technology. Prior to his work in agronomy and agriculture, he served in the U.S. Army and then worked as a science teacher in Chester, Vermont. He received a B.S. in science education from Boston University, an M.A. in adult education from Michigan State University and a Ph. D. in biophysics from Clayton University.

Ronald B. Ward spent his childhood summers on a family farm in Michigan, where he learned to love the country life. He earned a B.S. in park management from Michigan State University, an M.A. in divinity from Asbury Theological Seminary, and an M.A. in community counseling from the University of Kentucky. After working for and eventually directing the Lexington Central Kentucky Re-ED Program for emotionally disturbed children, Ron returned to his country roots where he was introduced to alternative health and the Reams method of testing urine and saliva. Subsequently, he met Philip Wheeler, and together, they decided to share the Reams concept on a larger level. This was accomplished through the formation of TransNational AGronomy.

EXTREMELY INTERESTING AND INFORMATIVE! - THOUGHT PROVOKING

This book discusses how many current land management principles have created an imbalance in the soil, creating more problems than we realize. The authors discuss how we can use natural resources to deal with or eliminate soil erosion, and the need for herbicides and insecticides. The book explains how our soil is a living organism, and requires a good balance of nutrients to allow for proper energy transfer between nutrients, soil, and plants. The points that are brought up are very thought provoking; things that we often overlook. One such point is that weeds and insects are not so much pests, but indicators of soil and plant life. Being a cash crop farmer, wanting to know how to restore our depleted farmland, and get away from "toxic" chemicals and fertilizers, this book has been a great teacher, and no doubt will be referenced in the future.

Incredible Reference Guide for Biological Farming

For a non-farmer, this book gave me a real insight into general farming practices, as well as an excellent summary of the literature on biological farming, soil recovery, understanding weeds and what they mean for soil health.

Overall, a very enjoyable read. Probably even better if you are a practical grower or hobbyist, as there are lots of practical descriptions of how to diagnose and handle all types of situations you will find yourself in over the lifecycle of a growing season.

Candid, unique presentation from an intelligence perspective rather than an academic, diplomatic or political perspective.

I state upfront that this review is a biased view of this product because I compiled it from two years of my husband's writings on his blog. That said, to my knowledge this is the only intelligence perspective of the neighborhood, which puts a different light on the subject. Most discussions are academic, political, military, or diplomatically based and as such often lack real world, on-the-ground perspectives and background. I have learned that the on-the-ground perspective matters a great deal and adds critical knowledge to a very complicated subject. Before publication, this book was reviewed and approved by the CIA, a lifelong requirement between the author and the CIA. From my perspective, by adding the intelligence view to the subject of Afghanistan and Iran the reader gets "the rest of the story".Intelligence Thoughts: Afghanistan and Iran

If you want some stark reality from a man, who was part of the clandestine side of the CIA and has walked the walk and talked the talk about our presence in Afghanistan, Iraq and Iran, read this. Straight and to the point, he tells it like it is! I suspect that there are more than a few in the Administration, our State Department and the CIA, who would prefer that this book was never published.
