Autopsy For An Empire: The Seven Leaders Who Built the Soviet Regime, by Dmitri Volkogonov

A revered scholar and tireless chronicler of his times, Dmitri Volkogonov raced against time to finish his final book before his death from cancer in 1995. The result is a brillant magnus opus -- a complete protrait of the U.S.S.R. from the bloody 1917 Russian Revolution to the political coup of 1991.

Amazon.com Review
In accordance with his belief that "it is often easier to become acquainted with the history of a period if it is seen through the lives of individuals," Dmitri Volkogonov's last book before his 1995 death addresses the lives of the seven men who ruled the Soviet Union during its seven decades of existence. Making full use of the access granted to him as a high-ranking officer of the Soviet Army (and later as military advisor to Boris Yeltsin) to the secret archives of the Communist Party, he amplifys and expands upon the themes of his full length biographies of Lenin and Stalin, then proceeds to take on their successors up to Mikhail Gorbachev. With painstaking details drawn from a true insider's perspective, he recreates both the stagnation of the Soviet bureaucracy and the collapse set in motion by perestroika. "Perhaps the only thing I achieved in this life," Volkogonov wrote, "was to break with the faith I had held for so long." That is untrue; he also brilliantly chronicled how that faith came to impose itself upon an entire society. Autopsy of an Empire is a fitting conclusion to that legacy.

From Publishers Weekly
Volkogonov, a Soviet historian, military general and debunking biographer of Lenin, Stalin and Trotsky, completed this illuminating study shortly before his death in 1995. Of the seven Soviet rulers profiled, Gorbachev gets the highest marks for initiating epochal reforms, though the author stresses that Gorbachev could have accomplished much more had he relinquished his faith in the communist system. Volkogonov cogently argues for a seamless connection between Lenin's absolutism and Stalin's merciless dictatorship. Drawing on new material, including declassified documents from state and Party archives, he reveals Lenin's paranoia toward foreigners as well as Stalin's pivotal role in egging on his puppet in North Korea, Kim Il-sung, to start a war with the South in 1950. Khrushchev, though he repudiated the Stalinist cult of personality, was out of touch with the masses, in Volkogonov's estimate, while indecisive, mediocre, suave Brezhnev mistook economic and social stagnation for stability. Both Yuri Andropov and Konstantin Chernenko were "political pygmies" who strived to preserve a sclerotic system. Bristling with startling revelations, this scathing panorama of seven decades of Soviet rule brims with much treachery, intrigue, reversals of fortune and personal idiosyncrasies. From Booklist
Volkogonov was a Red Army political commissar who, disillusioned, began researching Soviet leaders as the communist system stagnated in the 1980s. After biographies of Lenin, Trotsky, and Stalin, Volkogonov, in this, his final book, analyzes the careers and mentalities of those men and their successors. Volkogonov had archival access to the personal papers of some of the leaders, and he underscores the influence of Leninist ideology in their decisions. In the West, ideology was often discounted by those who argued the Soviet Union was a normal, rather than revolutionary, government. Instead, almost every major Soviet move in foreign policy, from the 1920 war with Poland, the pact with Hitler, the Korean War, and Third World interventions, emanated from a documentable doctrinal impulse. At home, few of the leaders could conceive of better economic methods than controlling and disciplining workers--or enslaving them, as under Stalin--and those who were more imaginative (Khrushchev, Andropov, Gorbachev) always were stymied by the Leninist system. The once top-secret personal details about Soviet leaders is the popular hook in this serious work. Gilbert Taylor

History by one who was there
By 2stents
If an autopsy is to exclusively pinpoint the cause of death, this is more like an autopsy combined with biography. Some of the descriptions of the lives of these leaders go on at some length on personal relationships and their final illnesses that are mostly irrelevant to how effective they were as leaders. Each leader gets a chapter, but within the chapters, the author jumps forward and back in time, which can be irritating if you like a straight chronological account. Still, having lived through most of these regimes, and having heard in my youth a lot about Lenin and Stalin, I was fascinated to learn about events and persons who had almost mythic character in my mind. Khrushchev actually considered a first-strike nuclear attack on the U.S.! I never knew that.
Extremely well-written, if a bit wordy. It was no surprise that the editor, in his preface, noted how severely some of the author's books needed to be edited in order to get published. The author is the quintessential insider, so this is a very personal, and intimate view of history.

Autopsy for an Empire
By Zoltan Janosi
This is an excellent book, but, of course, only those will enjoy it and find it fascinating who are deeply interested in the history and demise of the Soviet Union. The author had access to Soviet documents, which had been top secret previously. So he can reveal new information about the seven leaders of the Soviet Union, namely Lenin, Stalin, Khrushchov, Brezhnev, Andropov, Chernenko and Gorbachov. (The author was a three star general of the Soviet Union.)
I think it would help the reader if he first read the author's detailed biographies of Lenin and Stalin. His bio of Trotsky is also relevant.

Whilst accompanying Nell to what he speedily comes to regard as the house-party from hell, he meets Adeline Kendrick - acid-tongued and by no means beautiful, yet somehow alluring. Worse still, her relatives are quite deplorable - from Cousin Diana, a spoiled and ill-natured beauty, to manipulative and sadistic Uncle Richard. Too Little... Too Late
By Judge Tabor
I'll begin by saying this story had the maximum amount of potential. With a character like the Duke of Rockliffe who was so intriguing in The Parfit Knight (Rockliffe Book 1), our unusual heroine, Adeline Kendrick, and a writer with the skills of Ms. Riley, I was so looking forward to reading this book.

Although the first one-third of the book was superb where we have the suave, handsome, dry wit, Rockliffe, attending a house party with his younger sister, Nell, when lo and behold... he meets an acquaintance from his past and she's all grown up. Adeline Kendrick is no longer the little fairy like teen-ager who ran over hill and dale interacting with heirs to dukedoms and feeding small woodland creatures without her shoes. No, she's the "poor" cousin who is basically a servant to the horrible family who is hosting the house party.

It's obvious Adeline's former life was ripped out from under her feet - she's barely allowed out of the house, lest she revert back to the little gypsy of her youth. But, she has not gone into this role with her head tucked down - no, indeed - she's all sharp edges and can give as good as she gets - mostly. However, there have obviously been times in her life when the brutality of her Uncle Richard, who was used by the family to keep her in line, has unfortunately had its effect upon her. Still, she has fight left in her soul and nobody - not even the quick witted, put 'em in your place Rockville - can best her when she gets going.

Nevertheless, when Rockcliffe sees the grown-up Adeline, he's more fascinated by her than ever, even though she's obviously beneath him socially - she's too outspoken, and she's not considered beautiful but rather plain. To make a somewhat earthy play on words - beneath him is exactly where Rockcliffe wants Adeline - he can't get her out of his mind. In fact, when events transpire to put them together and he's asked by his best friend, Amberley, what the deal is - Rockcliffe can't really explain except to say that he just "really wanted" her. Desire? Definitely! Love? Not sure.

**Spoilerish**

Due to Adeline's hateful cousin Diana's manipulation, Rockliffe and Adeline find themselves "compromised" - not that they had done anything wrong, but in those days appearances were everything. I laugh here because Rockliffe doesn't give a rip about being compromised - he'll marry the girl much to everyone in the world's surprise. He takes her out of the arms of her awful family and totes her to London where she is given the royal treatment - lovely gowns, unbelievable jewelry - he even takes her to one of his country estates so he can teach her how to dance and hone her skills so she won't feel "less than" when she must enter Society as his duchess.

But, here's where the storyline began to fall into the pit for me. Although Rockliffe wanted her with his heart and soul - making attempt after attempt to get her to warm up and giving her weeks and months to become accustomed to him - still, Adeline's feelings of unworthiness and later a blackmail situation with old Uncle Richard contrive to scare her witless due to her concerns that the truth of her origins might harm Rockliffe's standing in Society. This resulted in Adeline backing off, withdrawing and being totally unable to show her true feelings toward Rockville, nor accepting his for her. Worse yet, she loses the best part of her personality. The Adeline we met at the house party would never have taken this blackmail situation sitting down.

Eventually, her lack of trust and openness with Rockcliffe takes a toll on their marriage. And, of course, there ain't nobody gonna go out on a limb and say the "love" word. This type of stuff I can take, but not for the entire last half of the book with the resolution coming only at around the 95% spot in the book after they had been married for at least five or six months and he had given her every chance in the world to trust him. No, Adeline hung on tightly to her worries, although she was willing to share them with Rockliffe's friends, which was not at all the thing to do. Heaven forbid!

Too. Little. Too. Late. What a waste - Rockcliffe deserved such a better story. Actually, I began to believe their whole marriage was indeed a msalliance. When the "good" part finally happened, I just didn't feel it. Yes, I'm gonna read the next book in the series The Player (Rockliffe Book 3) - I got a glimpse of that actor in France and I can't wait to find out what that's all about - I assume he is "The Player."

"You stop my breath. You always have."
By Linda Jean
"You stop my breath. You always have." said the heroine to her hero. At this point, my breath stopped, as well. The story was so well written, so beautifully depicted and so incredibly moving that I am hard pressed to say much beyond by all means, don't hesitate to read this book.

I hate it when reviewers say that an author is `like' Heyer, because invariably I am disappointed. So, I won't say that, precisely. What I will say is that if you like Heyer, you will, without doubt, like this book. This author's voice is her own, beautifully so, but the style of the hero is the caliber of Heyer's memorable, powerful and totally sure of themselves heroes. Equally impressive is the heroine of this book, who, like Heyer's heroines, gives as good as she gets.

The hero might have intended his marriage to be one of convenience, and the heroine might have agreed to it, but what really happened was a wonderful thing to read. Not only was this the kind of book you truly are compelled to keep reading, you will not skip a word.

If the only negative thing a reviewer can find is that the author changed a character's name from Denzil - to the point of requesting an apology from the author - well, it speaks for itself, one would think. I would prefer to thank this author for crafting such a beautiful book and creating characters so compelling as to stop my breath. I am incredibly awed by such talent. In summary, just read this book - it's a treasure.

Not a msalliance after all
By Danker
I loved this book.
The hero, Rock, should be ho-hum. After all, he is evocative of so many other Dukes in so many other romance stories - omniscient, courageous, "beautiful", a clever lover, wonderful brother and friend, with half-hooded eyes, a deceptively gentle manner and a tendency to ennui only relieved by manipulation and/or mischief-making. (Of course, one must acknowledge that most of them were created after Riley's creation of him.)
Instead of being ho-hum, he is gorgeous. Why? Because his love of the heroine makes him unsure and vulnerable.
And because he is drawn to a woman, not just by lust, but also because of her strength and loyalty and generous, if waspish nature.
The villains are sufficiently evil and credible, the many friends and family add to the story and it is a nice touch to provide an update on characters from the first book in the series.
Once again, Riley has no need to provide graphic details of the sex lives of the protagonists. Their passion for one another is beautifully expressed without the tediously formulaic offerings made in almost all current regencies.
Is there a third book in the series?
If so, please keep re-issuing as speedily as possible.

Funny!
By Sunshine P.
I have to admit there are a few typos, but I also have to admit that I probaly had a dozen laughs are so throughout this short story. The story reminded me of the old 3's Company sitcom, where a man or men surround themselves around women funny things can happen, it's very human nature. If you like to laugh and have a short attention span to reading a long novel, I recommend this book.

Generation Multiplex: The Image of Youth in American Cinema after 1980, by Timothy Shary

Generation Multiplex (2002) was the first comprehensive study of the representation of teenagers in American cinema since David Considine's Cinema of Adolescence in 1985. This updated and expanded edition reaffirms the idea that films about youth constitute a legitimate genre worthy of study on its own terms. Identifying four distinct subgenres—school, delinquency, horror, and romance—Timothy Shary explores hundreds of representative films while offering in-depth discussion of movies that constitute key moments in the genre, including Fast Times at Ridgemont High, A Nightmare on Elm Street, The Breakfast Club, Say Anything . . . , Boyz N the Hood, Scream, American Pie, Napoleon Dynamite, Superbad, The Twilight Saga, and The Hunger Games. Analyzing developments in teen films since 2002, Shary covers such topics as the increasing availability of movies on demand, which has given teens greater access to both popular and lesser-seen films; the recent dominance of supernatural and fantasy films as a category within the genre; and how the ongoing commodification of teen images in media affects real-life issues such as school bullying, athletic development, sexual identity, and teenage pregnancy.

By Timothy M. Horn
I have always enjoyed films, but sometimes the nuances do not occur to me. I decided to purchase this book to get a greater understanding of the shifting use of teens in movies. I was pleasantly surprised to read a text that was anything but dry and academic, but something interesting and accessible. I enjoyed it so much I am recommended it to my teenage nephew who also thoroughly enjoyed it. I sound this book to be a thoughtful interesting read showing the affect of an ever changing society on the creation of cinema.

This book gives a lucid, exciting, and accessible account of the surprising and counterintuitive ideas that shape our understanding of the sub-atomic world. It does not disguise the problems of interpretation that still remain unsettled 75 years after the initial discoveries. The main text makes no use of equations, but there is a Mathematical Appendix for those desiring stronger fare. Uncertainty, probabilistic physics, complementarity, the problematic character of measurement, and decoherence are among the many topics discussed. This volume offers the reader access to one of the greatest discoveries in the history of physics and one of the outstanding intellectual achievements of the twentieth century.

Review
`John Polkinghorne has brought to life that most mysterious and perplexing of revolutions in understanding and has made its mysteries accessible.' Peter Atkins, University of Oxford

`John Polkinghorne has produced an excellent piece of work. ... Many authors of "popular" books on modern physics have the regrettable habit of mixing science fact with science fiction. Polkinghorne never does that: he always allows the truth to stand by itself and show its own fascination. ... I think that this is an excellent contribution to the literature on quantum theory for a general audience.' Chris Isham, Imperial College, London

`This splendid book explains both the triumph and the mystery that is quantum theory. It is a triumph because of its towering mathematical structure, and amazing empirical accuracy. It is a mystery because of the conundrums about how to interpret it. John Polkinghorne, himself a distinguished quantum physicist, is a sure guide to all of this: he celebrates the successes of the theory, and shows unfailingly good judgement about the conundrums.' Jeremy Butterfield, University of Oxford

About the Author

John Polkinghorne was from 1968 to 1979 Professor of Mathematical Physics in the University of Cambridge, and later president of Queen's College. He is a Fellow of the Royal Society, and was knighted in 1997. His many books include The Quantum World (1986), The Faith of a Physicist (1994), and Science and Theology (1998).

This is NOT "Quantum Theory for Dummies"--but it's good.
By Mike Smith
This pocket-sized, 92-page text--113 pages with appendices and index--professes to be a "very short introduction" to an understanding of quantum theory, to the unseen world that's so many millions of times smaller than even atoms.

It's not at all a bad summary of the field of quantum mechanics, written fairly lucidly, concisely, and with interest, but I'd have to say it's lacking as an introduction to the subject, in that it really does assume its readers are intelligent people with something of a science background. Do not buy this expecting it to be QUANTUM THEORY FOR DUMMIES, because it's still fairly dense and heavy, and not written as clearly or as startlingly as much of Stephen Hawking's stuff. To some readers, this assumption of their intelligence may be refreshing, and it is to a degree, but with a subject as complex and bizarre as quantum mechanics, most non-scientists will need as much help as they can get, help not necessarily to be found in here.

I do have to say, though, that this is a book worth reading, and, then, re-reading. After I read it, I went back through and looked up a few of the more major concepts--quantum entanglement, in which two particles that interact will continue to affect each other no matter how far apart they're separated; Schrdinger's Cat and the idea of a state between life and death, between here and there, between being and non-being; Heisenberg's Uncertainty Principle and how you can't have a knowledge of both position and momentum of a particle; et cetera--and just that brief re-reading was a huge help to me.

The book will teach you a lot about the subject, and will give you a good start toward further educating your knowledge of this awesome and frustrating topic, this topic which has already done so much toward unlocking the secrets of our existence and our universe--and toward confusing everyone.

Its glossary is lacking, its author has a subtle but evident Christian bias, but overall it's a good little book, and I enjoyed it. I recommend it.

Getting some good lessons from this book
By Steve in Raleigh, NC
I'm going through this now. The first part I've gone through is the history of Quantum Theory and it is excellent. The second half looks somewhat difficult to read but I'll give it a try. I'm a former science teacher having had a good chunk of chemistry, physics, and biology courses in my life so I can follow most of it SO FAR.

He did help me immensely already with one question of confusion regarding the double slit experiment, a classic quantum "mystery." Simple explanations of this experiment (ones you see on YouTube such a the "quantum professor") always imply that this experiment has been done historically by placing "detectors"at the slits to measure which slit the photons or electrons went through. All the simple discussions and apparently poorly researched discussions imply this has been done. Polkinhome does not say it has been done but states that "suppose we were to modify the experiment by putting a detector"..........This is to say he made it appear as though it might be done, not that it had been done. And this book is a 2002 publish date book. So I immediately questioned whether the detector thing had been done as is often stated and assumed in some trivial videos on YouTuble. It apparently has only been a "thought experiment" as noted in Wikipedia. So, apparently it has never been done because the only way you could detect a particle would be to absorb it and that would defeat the purpose of the experiment and make it unintelligible and meaningless.Wikipedia (an obvious 3rd level source) So he has done me a great service to start seeking for original, first level source material, and to avoid the 2nd and 3rd level source material. Now I'm into reading the delayed choice eraser types of double slit experiments which are more sophisticated and I'm still hunting for actually, "real" references that did the so called "detector" part. While hunting for the detector data I've seen statements that another famous YouTube video with the physicist Thom Campbell discussing the delayed choice quantum eraser experiment (which reinforces the idea of detectors at the slits) is phony in the sense that Campbell is a quack, some kind of new world nut case with some kind of crazed view of consciousness and quantum physics that is unscientific. So this book has given me a great historical look, triggered me to find some better details of experiments and I hope I can finish this book and learn more. I'm at the beginning of understanding quantum physics and this book is an excellent start. Polkinghome has stimulated me immensely to get at the truth of the experimental history. This is a difficult subject that many hear have indicated.
