Too Little... Too Late
By Judge Tabor
I'll begin by saying this story had the maximum amount of potential. With a character like the Duke of Rockliffe who was so intriguing in The Parfit Knight (Rockliffe Book 1), our unusual heroine, Adeline Kendrick, and a writer with the skills of Ms. Riley, I was so looking forward to reading this book.

Although the first one-third of the book was superb where we have the suave, handsome, dry wit, Rockliffe, attending a house party with his younger sister, Nell, when lo and behold... he meets an acquaintance from his past and she's all grown up. Adeline Kendrick is no longer the little fairy like teen-ager who ran over hill and dale interacting with heirs to dukedoms and feeding small woodland creatures without her shoes. No, she's the "poor" cousin who is basically a servant to the horrible family who is hosting the house party.

It's obvious Adeline's former life was ripped out from under her feet - she's barely allowed out of the house, lest she revert back to the little gypsy of her youth. But, she has not gone into this role with her head tucked down - no, indeed - she's all sharp edges and can give as good as she gets - mostly. However, there have obviously been times in her life when the brutality of her Uncle Richard, who was used by the family to keep her in line, has unfortunately had its effect upon her. Still, she has fight left in her soul and nobody - not even the quick witted, put 'em in your place Rockville - can best her when she gets going.

Nevertheless, when Rockcliffe sees the grown-up Adeline, he's more fascinated by her than ever, even though she's obviously beneath him socially - she's too outspoken, and she's not considered beautiful but rather plain. To make a somewhat earthy play on words - beneath him is exactly where Rockcliffe wants Adeline - he can't get her out of his mind. In fact, when events transpire to put them together and he's asked by his best friend, Amberley, what the deal is - Rockcliffe can't really explain except to say that he just "really wanted" her. Desire? Definitely! Love? Not sure.

**Spoilerish**

Due to Adeline's hateful cousin Diana's manipulation, Rockliffe and Adeline find themselves "compromised" - not that they had done anything wrong, but in those days appearances were everything. I laugh here because Rockliffe doesn't give a rip about being compromised - he'll marry the girl much to everyone in the world's surprise. He takes her out of the arms of her awful family and totes her to London where she is given the royal treatment - lovely gowns, unbelievable jewelry - he even takes her to one of his country estates so he can teach her how to dance and hone her skills so she won't feel "less than" when she must enter Society as his duchess.

But, here's where the storyline began to fall into the pit for me. Although Rockliffe wanted her with his heart and soul - making attempt after attempt to get her to warm up and giving her weeks and months to become accustomed to him - still, Adeline's feelings of unworthiness and later a blackmail situation with old Uncle Richard contrive to scare her witless due to her concerns that the truth of her origins might harm Rockliffe's standing in Society. This resulted in Adeline backing off, withdrawing and being totally unable to show her true feelings toward Rockville, nor accepting his for her. Worse yet, she loses the best part of her personality. The Adeline we met at the house party would never have taken this blackmail situation sitting down.

Eventually, her lack of trust and openness with Rockcliffe takes a toll on their marriage. And, of course, there ain't nobody gonna go out on a limb and say the "love" word. This type of stuff I can take, but not for the entire last half of the book with the resolution coming only at around the 95% spot in the book after they had been married for at least five or six months and he had given her every chance in the world to trust him. No, Adeline hung on tightly to her worries, although she was willing to share them with Rockliffe's friends, which was not at all the thing to do. Heaven forbid!

Too. Little. Too. Late. What a waste - Rockcliffe deserved such a better story. Actually, I began to believe their whole marriage was indeed a msalliance. When the "good" part finally happened, I just didn't feel it. Yes, I'm gonna read the next book in the series The Player (Rockliffe Book 3) - I got a glimpse of that actor in France and I can't wait to find out what that's all about - I assume he is "The Player."

"You stop my breath. You always have."
By Linda Jean
"You stop my breath. You always have." said the heroine to her hero. At this point, my breath stopped, as well. The story was so well written, so beautifully depicted and so incredibly moving that I am hard pressed to say much beyond by all means, don't hesitate to read this book.

I hate it when reviewers say that an author is `like' Heyer, because invariably I am disappointed. So, I won't say that, precisely. What I will say is that if you like Heyer, you will, without doubt, like this book. This author's voice is her own, beautifully so, but the style of the hero is the caliber of Heyer's memorable, powerful and totally sure of themselves heroes. Equally impressive is the heroine of this book, who, like Heyer's heroines, gives as good as she gets.

The hero might have intended his marriage to be one of convenience, and the heroine might have agreed to it, but what really happened was a wonderful thing to read. Not only was this the kind of book you truly are compelled to keep reading, you will not skip a word.

If the only negative thing a reviewer can find is that the author changed a character's name from Denzil - to the point of requesting an apology from the author - well, it speaks for itself, one would think. I would prefer to thank this author for crafting such a beautiful book and creating characters so compelling as to stop my breath. I am incredibly awed by such talent. In summary, just read this book - it's a treasure.

Not a msalliance after all
By Danker
I loved this book.
The hero, Rock, should be ho-hum. After all, he is evocative of so many other Dukes in so many other romance stories - omniscient, courageous, "beautiful", a clever lover, wonderful brother and friend, with half-hooded eyes, a deceptively gentle manner and a tendency to ennui only relieved by manipulation and/or mischief-making. (Of course, one must acknowledge that most of them were created after Riley's creation of him.)
Instead of being ho-hum, he is gorgeous. Why? Because his love of the heroine makes him unsure and vulnerable.
And because he is drawn to a woman, not just by lust, but also because of her strength and loyalty and generous, if waspish nature.
The villains are sufficiently evil and credible, the many friends and family add to the story and it is a nice touch to provide an update on characters from the first book in the series.
Once again, Riley has no need to provide graphic details of the sex lives of the protagonists. Their passion for one another is beautifully expressed without the tediously formulaic offerings made in almost all current regencies.
Is there a third book in the series?
If so, please keep re-issuing as speedily as possible.
