About the Author

Mark J. Price

Mark J. Price is a Microsoft Certified Trainer (MCT) and Microsoft Specialist, Programming in C# and Architecting Microsoft Azure Solutions, with more than 20 years of educational and programming experience. Since 1993, Mark has passed more than 90 Microsoft programming exams and specializes in preparing others to pass them too. His students range from professionals with decades of experience to 16-year-old apprentices with no experience at all. He successfully guides all of them by combining educational skills with real-world experience, consulting on and developing systems for enterprises worldwide. Between 2001 and 2003, Mark was employed full-time to write official courseware for Microsoft in Redmond, USA. His team wrote the first training courses for C# and .NET while they were still an early alpha version. While with Microsoft, he delivered "train-the-trainer" classes to get other MCTs up to speed in C# and .NET. In 2010, Mark took a postgraduate certificate in education (PGCE). He taught GCSE and A-level mathematics in two secondary schools in London. Mark holds a Computer Science BSc (Hons) degree from the University of Bristol, UK.

A Good "First Look" at .NET Core 1.0

I can't give this book 5 stars due to some minor issues. For example, some of the Visual Studio screen shots are not accurate because as Microsoft updated .NET Core 1.0 RC2, they also pushed updates for Visual Studio. This is minor and for the most part the author did a good job of annotating where code was going to change by the time .NET Core reaches RTM next month. This book didn't attempt to go nearly as deep as the Wrox publication on C# 6 and .NET Core 1.0 but that's a good thing because .NET Core has been changing too fast. As a result, the Wrox book has far more errors in it.

This book also has some cool extras like a section on the .NET Portability Analyzer (Visual Studio extension) and managing source code on GitHub. Grab this book now and hold off on buying the in-depth 1500 page reference until well after .NET Core has been officially released.

An excellent book for learning C# 6 and .NET Core 1.0

An outstanding book for learning C#, without trying to be a complete guide to every small detail as so many other programming books out there, as Mark writes in the intro:
"There are many C# books, some, more than a thousand pages long, that aim to be comprehensive references to the C# programming language and the .NET Framework. This book is different. [...] I will point out the cool corners and gotchas of C# so you can impress colleagues and employers and quickly get productive. Rather than slowing down and boring some of you by explaining every little thing, I assume that if a term I use is new to you, then you know how to Google it..."
This approach, and mindset, makes the book a much better read, without compromising the essential parts of C# that you need to learn.

The book starts from the very beginning, and will allow people with very little programming experience to pick up this book and just follow it step by step to learn C# 6. While at the same time enabling experienced C# programmers to read over the basic parts fast only stopping to get the "What's new in C# 6 and .NET Core 1.0"-parts. And enabling a relatively fast read for catching up on the direction .NET is going.

The structure, examples and small anecdotes in the book represents the fact that Mark is an excellent teacher as well as author. Having had Mark as instructor on a C# course, i can say this book represents a vast knowledge of C# and how to teach it.

Great ending to the storyline

I loved this book. I've been waiting to see what happened with Kiera and A'Ran and Anshan for a while. And was even more intrigued when I read Kiera's Home. I was happy to see it was included in this book because I needed the refresher, and it was a good intro to the remainder of the story.

As we learned in Kiera's Home, Kiera learns she is dying and suspects that Anshan is too, but doesn't know if she is driving the planet's demise or vice versa. She hasn't told A'Ran for fear that he would return her home to Earth, and the secret is weighing on her. On top of that, she will see Evey soon after assuming their friendship is over and they would never have reason to meet again. But Anshan needs help, and trading with their old allies is crucial.

I loved how the story unfolded, and how much A'Ran evolved from the duty bound Dhjan to someone who places family ahead of duty. There was a spiritual component, in how the planet was alive and bound by the souls of the people who inhabited it in the past. Some of it was definitely fantastical, but engaging. And the ending was priceless. My only downside is that it does need another quick scrubbing grammatically. Lizzy books don't normally have many errors. They were a little distracting, but overall, I enjoyed this and read it much faster than I anticipated.

Awesome series

And Lizzy Ford again does an awesome job with Kiera's Sun - which is the sequel to “Kiera’s Moon” and also includes the novelette, “Kiera’s Home”. You really need to read Kiera's Moon before reading Kiera's Sun - it will make a whole lot more sense to you and will definitely catch you up on the story!!!

In Kiera's Sun - the 2nd book in the Anshan series, A'Ran (Kiera's lifemate) is amazed to learn that his lifemate (Kiera) is alive and was just kidnapped by her friends lifemate. This book continues the story of Kiera and A'Ran and their plans to fix the planet that they both are connected to. I don't write spoilers so I won't say anything more about the story - but this too is an awesome book and you will find that it is hard to put it down.

I am disappointed to hear that this is going to be where the story ends - but I guess that all stories must end somewhere.

I have been waiting for this book, and I was not disappointed. In this installment of the Anshan series, A'Ran is trying to fix the planet he blew up so that his people can finally go home. With the planets around him thinking he has gone insane and with no allies he is struggling to complete his duties. The one ray of sunshine is that his nishani has been returned to him and stands by his side. Keira believes in A'Ran but she has a secret of her own that she is terrified she won't be able to do anything about and will fail A'Ran and their people. There are a number of twists in this story that make it a tried and true Lizzy page turner. I can only hope that maybe she will add to this series. Definitely worth reading and if you haven't read Keira's Moon you should definitely read to get a better understanding of the background.

Great overall, but missing some planets from Rebels and Rogue One

My boys enjoy the book, but I was a little disappointed. It has major planets from OT, PT, The Clone Wars, Rebels and TFA. It shows the location of Lothal, Jedha, Starkiller Base, Jakku and Takodana, but it doesn't show Scarif, Atollon, Eadu, Lah'mu or Wobani. Overall not bad, love the chornological order of events and art but wished it included those planets. The missing planets are all in the Outer Rim, except Wobani which is said to be in the Mid Rim. Kids still love the book.

Fantastic book for any young Star Wars fan

My 6 year old son LOVES this book! It is huge, and the illustrations are beautiful. He will sit and look through the book for almost an hour, finding new details to point out to me each time. This is a great book for (an hour of quiet time) for any young Star Wars fan.

Communal Conflict in Northern Ireland, Explained

Northern Ireland is well known for the enduring conflict there over its constitutional arrangements within the United Kingdom. To follow the line taken by the American press, however, it is a religious war in which Catholics and Protestants commit atrocities in their struggle for power.
The Dynamics of Conflict, by renowned scholarly duo Ruane and Todd, is an excellent corrective to this common misconception. The book takes readers through the conflict step-by-step, explaining how the changing relationships between nationalists and unionists, Irish and British, natives and settlers Catholics and Protestants, have evolved over the centuries. Despite the evolution of those relationships, what is still more remarkable is the enduring constancy. Overlapping badges of identity have created two strong and self-conscious communities in a very small region where communal politics have subsumed most internal class, gender, and philosophic divisions.
Ruane and Todd show how the 'Troubles' in Northern Ireland since the 1960s can be seen as the most recent manifestation of an enduring rivalry restructured from an all-Ireland basis into a Northern Ireland-only basis by the constitutional 'settlement' of the early 1920s which divided the island into the nationalist 26-County 'Free State' (now Republic of Ireland) and the unionist 6-County Northern Ireland.
The text predates the Good Friday Agreement, but diputes over the implementation of that settlement are a testament to its quality of scholarship.
This work must be seen along with the works of John McGarry and Brendan O'Leary, Paul Bew, and Arthur Miller as essential for a good understanding of the nature of the Northern Ireland conflict.

The most important book I've read about our origins. I'm so happy to know that ancient information has been preserved waiting for us to be ready to hear it. Our picture of history is so limited. This copy was purchased as a gift. I found my first copy sat on my shelf for several years before I could read it. There are books we pick up before we're ready for them. Now I'm reading it over and over.

Highly recommend!!

I used it to review my reading and writing skills for taking state required teacher's tests. It is very well structured and drill style, so although it still was challenging, very comprehensive. Ideally, I should have had a support system of a proof reader/ writing coach ( at least a person to read and comment on my writing) while following the book, but I didn't have anyone handy then. Still it was extremely useful to have this book. Buying it is a little too costly, so I rented the kindle version. If you need it only for a week, free sample could be just as good.

The Meiji Restoration of 1868 is most often seen as a glorious event marking the overthrow of Tokugawa feudalism and the beginning of Japan's modern transformation. Yet it had its dark side. The Aizu domain in northeastern Japan had staunchly supported the old regime. For this it was attacked by the new government's forces from Choshu and Satsuma in the autumn of 1868. Its castle town was burned to the ground, and during a month-long siege, whole families perished. After defeat, the domain was abolished and its samurai population exiled to barren terrain in the far north.

Shiba Goro was born into an Aizu samurai family in 1859. He was just ten years old at the time of the attack, which claimed most of his family. In the cruel world of exile, he lived with his father on the edge of starvation, struggling to survive. Eventually making his way to Tokyo, he became a servant, and though born in an enemy domain, gained entrance to a military school of the new regime. Shiba's abilities were recognized, and he rose through the officer ranks to become a full general - a singular distinction for an Aizu samurai in an army dominated by former samurai of the Choshu domain.

Remembering Aizu tells of Shiba's earlier years. It is an extraordinary story that provides insights and material for a social history of the Restoration and its aftermath. But above all, it is a vividly rendered personal account of courage and determination, loss and remembrance.

Teruko Craig is a senior lecturer emerita in Japanese at Tufts University and associate in research at the Reischauer Institute of Japanese Studies, Harvard University. Her previous translations include Musui's Story: The Autobiography of a Tokugawa Samurai(1991) and the Autobiography of Shibusawa Eiichi: From Peasant to Entrepreneur (1994).

Interesting and moving memoir

This is a fairly short book, which I found fascinating. There is a very useful introduction which gives the historical context and details on Shiba's family. The memoir takes place during the early years of the Meiji era, when Japan was undergoing an upheaval and transformation from a feudal state to a modern country.

Gor� Shiba, son of an upper class samurai family, lost his mother, grandmother and 2 sisters during the punitive war against Aizu province. His father and 3 brothers survived, but they were separated, though they managed to keep close ties. He lived from the ages of 10 to 15 as an underpaid servant. At 15 he was accepted into a military school, and his fortunes took a better turn. He eventually retired as a general. This memoirs covers his life from about 8 to 16. It is simply but well told, and often quite moving. It offers a glimpse into Japanese life in those turbulent times not well known in the West.

I highly recommend it.

This work was a required read for a course on Japanese history course, and provides an interesting perspective for cultural studies through time.
