A total of 305 bird species has been reported from the Ladakh region, of which 34 species have not been sighted after 1960. Similarly, two of the 33 mammal species have not been seen for some time. Ladakh, like any other cold desert in the world, is a fragile ecosystem that can be easily spoiled by unimaginative planning and uncontrolled tourism. This book gives practical and specific suggestions on how to conserve the ecosystem and enjoy the region's beauty without destroying it.

The best book on Ladakh's wildlife, to my knowledge

Beautiful book, well edited and written, with robust hardcover and binding.

Maybe it is a bit bulky to carry it when you are trekking in Ladakh's mountains and valleys, but nevertheless, it is a fine book to have at home, to learn in advance of your journey, and to revisit afterwards.

By the way, it is (or was) possible to get it in Leh, at a considerable lower price, providing that some of the amazingly interesting bookshops are still working (I was there five years ago).

Anyway, it is good to have it before you travel there, because when on the trail you will not have much time to read.

Paul Burns is Professor of Entrepreneurship and Dean of the University of Bedfordshire Business School, UK. He also formerly served as Director of the 3i European Enterprise Research Centre, researching small firms across Europe. He has been a Visiting Fellow at Harvard Business School, USA, and a Visiting Professor at the Open University Business School, UK, where he developed the multi-media Small Business Programme which was screened on BBC2. He is Fellow and a former President of the Institute for Small Business and Entrepreneurship (ISBE). He is a chartered accountant, having worked for Arthur Andersen in London. For four years, he ran his own firm, Design for Learning Ltd.

Not what I expected

I didn't realize it was based on European examples. I didn't realize it was a textbook. I was looking for some more real world experiences, not so much theory. I got enough of that in College! This is my fault for not researching what I was purchasing a little better.

160 Pages of Musclebound Perfection!

I've been a fan of Takeshi Matsu for years so I've been eagerly waiting for his second English release even before I knew if it would even happen haha. Thankfully it did happen and just like the last (More and More of You) it doesn't disappoint.

The stories included are: The Dangerous Games of Dr. Makumakuran 1 & 2, Yashio and Shibayama, Big Man, Tiny Boss and Wolf Mask. All art is wonderfully uncensored and like previous releases the cover/back page flaps come with full color artwork of each story. Plus at the end an afterword by Matsu summarizing all the stories, the ideas behind them and thanking the fans who bought the books is present. I won't spoil any of the stories but none feel run of the mill or boring, its all one intriguing fun story after the next in classic Matsu style.

As for errors so far I've only seen one spelling mistake that I had to glare at in order to catch. Luckily I've seen none of the cut off text seen Mentaiko's Priapus also released by Bruno Gmunder which could just be a lucky coincidence due to text bubble placement. So good job on this go round.

All in all this book is a very standard yet still satisfying (I mean that literally) release (that too).

Concise helpful and practical with fully worked examples

I acquired this book many years ago, but never read it. (Incidentally, I remember once meeting Mike Fryer briefly too, but that was on a separate occasion, also a very long time ago.) Recently I needed to re-learn/remember how to do linear programming so I could solve an elementary bit of game theory, and remembered this book. It was pitched exactly right! It starts at the beginning and gives a basic but reasonably complete understanding of the practical aspects of solving elementary problems, without getting bogged down. All the examples are worked through, with a complete set of answers to all of the exercises and a few more occasional pointers added as required, - having all of the answers explained in this way was very helpful for working alone. The book makes no pretence of giving a complete theory, and that was OK because I just wanted to know how to do the basics, which is just what the text offers by staying practical and solving problems illustrating various situations that can arise. The necessary bits of basic theory that are explained are usually quite clear, there were only a couple of places where the description seemed a bit lacking and I had to stop and puzzle out for myself just what was going on, and then add a few lines of pencilled explanation in the margin to help myself out the next time round. (That will be when I've forgotten again, and have to look it up once more.)

The book is a first edition from 1978, thirty-five years ago now, and I guess there weren't any more. As such I found it does contain the usual quota of typographical errors, perhaps at least one every other page on average. None of these significantly detracted from the presented material, and in fact spotting and correcting these typos actually helped me in working through the text and the exercises.

In summary: does what the book's title says on the tin, as they say. Succeeds in giving the reader a practical problem solving approach. I'm very pleased to have the book and to have worked through it. And, I was able afterwards to solve my little game theory puzzle that first prompted me to pick the book up. Recommended!
